Govt announces Ukrainian style scheme to bring thousands more migrants to UK

I believe mainly from Eritrea and Sudan.

Be interesting to see how many migrant supporters on here offer to take them into their homes!

If it’s the same as Ukrainian scheme you will get paid about £380 a month.

Getting ready for the usual excuses - haven’t got a spare room, can’t afford it, I live in a flat, I am too old, my second cousin twice removed lives with me etc etc. 🤣

I think that those willing to help Ukrainian families were well intentioned and some of those cases did work out but many didn’t.It would be the same for this new idea, in fact I would be surprised if it got off the ground.

I certainly find the post by DAR to be goady, the one citing AI.
Nothing remotely clever about it.

You can’t know if Primrose or any other poster supports the right of asylum seekers to claim asylum here.I would think that most people support genuine asylum seekers.
This new initiative may work, it has in Canada apparently but it’s a big country with a lot of room for incomers.

I’m giddy but I actually meant goady!

Cossy Sat 27-Jun-26 22:04:58

I think some of you on this thread are actually, either intentionally or unintentionally confrontation and giddy and therefore I simply am taking no further part in this thread.

I bid you all goodnight smile

I can only talk about my own experience. We have had two Ukranian families living with us . The first family of 4 came in 2022 and stayed 8 months. Now live in a rented house nearby, both parents work FT, the two children are well settled at school. We see them regulsrly - we babysit for them, help out in school holidays and share meals together on occasions.
Our second family came this year - a mum and daughter. The mum is working 22 hours a week and the 9 year old is well settled in school. They hope to move on when possible.
Both experiences have been enriching and we are so glad we have done it. It has been hard work but so very worthwhile.

Well done. I have the utmost respect for you and your family! thanks

Ukrainians are white. There are people that do not judge or rank asylum seekers/ refugees from war torn areas by the colour of their skin. Sudan and adjacent Eritrea many are aware is the most war torn area. I still suspect organisations and individuals will come forward for none white Sudan and Eritrean refugees in this scheme.

Goodness me! I'd never thought of that! Eritreans might be black, but at least the majority of them are Christian.

So….will anyone on this thread accept payment for taking in refugees from Sudan, Eritrea ?
I have been honest and so has FGT in saying why we won’t so lets hear from the rest of the supporters of this initiative ?

Many many people took up the Ukrainian scheme and hosted.

However, whether you like it or not Primrose, those offering do have to be a situation that fits having someone living with them,, that means the space, the right areas, the will and the want.

You have zero idea about how people on here might already have hosted someone, who might have funded charities supporting refugees, might actually volunteer with refugees.

The likelyhood of many pensioners coming forward, particularly those on low incomes, with their own health and financial issues, is likely to be low.

I think you’re being pretty unfair to those of us who do support the rights of Asylum Seekers to make claims here.

I think it is one of the most unpleasant posts I have seen.

Wow! That was clever DAR.
Yes, it does help. 👏 👏

Wyllow3 Sat 27-Jun-26 21:46:41

No, it varies according to area as to the % - over all about 50%.

How about reading this GN's? its a good summary of why we need to take Eritreans, what the persecution actually is.

Accusations of 'nasty'.
Accusations of 'sarcasm'.
Could this be attempts to 'control' a Thread by 'suggesting' how Posters respond?

Thought that was to be discouraged?

I was wondering because I do feel a bit bullied, but I'm happy for other posters to see what their peers are like.

Russia flexing its expansionist muscles a bit too close for comfort.

Sorry, I don't understand. How does giving shelter to Ukrainians affect what Russia is doing?

valdali Sat 27-Jun-26 21:25:03

Some posts assuming these are going to be young men. As it's set up similarly to the Ukrainian scheme and specifically for taking vulnerable non-combatants out of a conflict zone, the demographics are likely to be similar to Ukraine too.
Ukrainian refugees 70% female adult with significant numbers of children.

Partly because Ukrainians are "white" to be blunt.

People viewed it entirely differently.

Not just about Russia.

********

What a lot of people don't realise is that, for example, many Eritreans are Christian. Again, people assume otherwise unless they know.
One refugee I know got out due to church connections and sponsorship 3/4 years ago.

Oh I really don’t know about that LemonJam as the situation with Ukraine ( on our European doorstep) is a different case.

I don't really understand in what way it's different.

CatsWhiskas Sat 27-Jun-26 20:43:33

I know quite a few people who have self-contained annexes, which they use for letting to students, visiting academics, medics on short term contracts and and as Airbnbs. Many of them are currently letting to Ukrainians.

If insufficient organisations and willing individuals come forward for the numbers proposed the scheme won’t get off the ground. I suspect it will get off the ground and there will be sufficient organisations and individuals who come forward.

People came forward to support Ukrainian refugees so are equally as likely to come forward to support those from other countries. The scheme has done well in Canada so can in the UK.

I assume you've never travelled on a road or been in a plane, if you're so risk-averse.

What a thoroughly nasty comment. You know full well FGT has done both, are you trying to belittle her aversion to the risk of taking a stranger into her home? Do we assume you will be offering a home to a refugee since you're obviously not risk averse at all?

Sarcasm on your part Catswhiskas but no sarcasm used by LemonJam which is the difference.
Will you be allowing a migrant to live in your home?
