Burnham: Is the Media Tempting Fate by Jumping the Gun?

Well, the iNewspaper seems to be - featuring a photo of the Burnham tribe billed as "the new First Family".

Eh? There's the not insignificant matter of democratic process......or is Andy Burnham's visa to Downing Street sorted and just waiting to be rubber-stamped?

I don't think it is all charactered by that: I think some are, but I'm just not so cynical. There will also be genuine friendships, kindnesses, focusing on constituency needs, from those who have gone in to try and "make a difference".

In a long political history, I can recall both, at many levels.

And I would so like to introduce you David to R, in an adding ward, a counsellor, running a business with his wife (indoor skateboarding), two autistic children, who is passionate about "making things better" for those most in need.

Party politics is adversarial just like the legal system, male or female it doesn't matter, there is no room for pussy cats it's dog eat dog. Whether it's Westminster or County Hall it's the same power game, some Parish Councils are not much better with dominant individuals ruling everyone else for their own ends.

Politics is inevitably competitive, but that doesn't mean it has to be "dog eat dog." Good representatives can challenge each other robustly while still behaving respectfully and working together when there's common ground. If we accept cynicism as inevitable, we risk excusing behaviour that shouldn't be normal.

I agree the culture is more than just a boys club aspect. All organisations have their own culture some aspects more negative than positive and vice versa.

New leaders usually are. mindful to find out about the prevailing culture as they come into office so they can make it mote fit for purpose and more current as social and political norms change over time.

DaisyAnneReturns Sat 04-Jul-26 11:14:44

I'm not sure it's just the Boys Club nature of Parliament. I think, over time, most organisations start to work for the employees not the customer. They tend to improve when they have a shake up - new owners, reconstruction, downsizing, etc. Perhaps that's just what Parliament needs.

LemonJam Fri 03-Jul-26 15:08:58

He said the LP should have kept Sue Gray in office and that would have gone some way to dealing with problem 1). It was McSweeney that actively tried to get rid of her. and portion himself. Perhaps evidence of the boys club culture mentioned on another OP.

LemonJam Fri 03-Jul-26 15:07:10

Thanks for the very interesting link DAR 👏.

Phil M said that Starmer and the LP's 2 biggest problems as they came to government:

1) They were not ready to hit the ground running but it wasn't all their fault I can't emphasise enough how the Conservatives salted the earth and shat on the country and that Rishi Sunak didn't let the LP in to talk to the Civil service till just a few weeks before the GE- when he should have given access much sooner so the LP could discuss the viability and implementation of their plans.

2) That the country wanted change quickly and that is just not possible and that remains the case.

AB should be more prepared but he will still need to grapple with the second problem. In fact anyone who is elected PM- even if it's Frage in three years time will still have that problem.

The electorate needs to become a bit more realistic and a bit more patient or we will continue to be ungovernable as a country.

Do you mean like a person paid to do a job of work, but doesn't show up?

I can think of someone who fits that category.
He applied for and was given an important job in Clacton.

Tooyoungtobeagrandma,
How do you make a legal, medical assessment to ascertain if a person 'can't be arsed to work'?

LizzieDrip Thu 02-Jul-26 15:44:50

homelessness

LizzieDrip Thu 02-Jul-26 15:40:49

Agreed Iam64.

I just wish AB would say that rather than making out he’s ‘solved’ homeless in Manchester.

Iam64 Thu 02-Jul-26 15:01:12

Manchester , like every other city has a problem with homelessness. Fourteen years of austerity that devastated services like drug , alcohol, mental health and family support, alongside lack of social housing has increased homelessness.

Has your neighbour got any more pearls of wisdom you’d like to share with us.

LemonJam Thu 02-Jul-26 12:40:05

Farage, with his partner has purchased in cash, ie mortgage free property to the value of $4million since Britain left Brexit in 2024. He has received a £5million gift from Harborne etc etc. He's much more on the make than AB- no question!

If you don't feel AB has helped the homeless in Grter Manchester either by his financial contributions or the work of his Mayoral office so be it. His key achievements can be easily found on line for anyone who cares to look.

I dare say the 15% of his salary that AB gives away (and lets us all know about it) is more than offset by the rent he receives on the London ex council flat he purchased when he was an MP.

And diverts attention away from the fact that he hasn’t actually done much else to help the homeless in Manchester which is pretty bad I believe [happy to be corrected]…

I think the idol Burnham will be shown to have feet of clay.

He talks the talk. And walks the walk.
But really has has nothing new or useful to offer.

All the nonsense about devolution, HS2 etc. Is pure BS . And not going to happen.

He and his crony advisors seem to come up with new gimmicks everyday.

Today, it was getting teenage, unemployed ethnic minorities in to work.

Obviously courting their vote

A neighbour of mine.Thinks that Burnham is just a Scouser on the make.

That must be why AB has given away 15% of his salary to local causes then for some years and plans to continue?

I think your neighbour needs to look more closely at Farage to understand a politician actually on the make- big time!

Another mistake was hitting businesses with the resulting effect of young joblessness.

I also agree with this. Many young people struggling to find work now .

Burnham wasn't born in Liverpool, so he's not a scouser. He's a woolly backer.
