breaking news on the BBC news site that they are investigating her death.
I didn't always agree with her opinions of her politics but would hate that her death had been tragic .RIP.

MissAdventure Sun 12-Jul-26 19:43:56

It doesn't bear rhinking about; the fear.
It must be terrible.

NotSpaghetti Sun 12-Jul-26 19:43:07

We do not know she was terrified.
All this is speculation.

Shinamae Sun 12-Jul-26 19:24:55

I can’t help but think how absolutely terrified she must’ve been…..😢

crazyH Sun 12-Jul-26 19:23:48

A disgruntled relative ? There was no evidence of a break-in. She probably knew her killer …… someone who had asked her for a loan and she refused …thinking aloud here

I think it must be Cossy as all the papers are carrying the same story many with lots of extra information from neighbours. As to why it will come out in the eventual trial.
A terrible terrible thing for an elderly lady, regardless of who she was.

Yes I agree thanks

On the Daily Telegraph and The Sun for those interested. Neighbours saw him leaving home at 7 am with a large stick in the car. Drove to Dartmoor. Sounds like he is the one.

👍👍 Let’s hope so.

The information about the red car in the village came from locals and was being discussed openly on news before 9.30 this morning, so no-one was disclosing sensitive police information.

Thanks.

I really hope this wasn’t a politically motivated act, no one needs MPs to feel more insecure and I truly hope certain parties don’t attempt to turn this vile murder into any kind of “protest” or statement about certain groups being targeted.

I’m sorry Miss Widdecombe died in this manner, I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

Those who knew her personally have all stated she was kind, funny and considerate and she was certainly a “good sport” on Strictly, as was Anton!

This needs to be dealt with swiftly by our police and CPS and her family and friends need to be able to grieve properly and celebrate her life in the way they feel appropriate.

Awful horrible crime.

The suspect who was arrested in Rotherham drove 300miles to Haytor on the day Ann Widdecombe was murdered. He was recorded as having left the property at 7am and was seen putting a large wooden stick in the car. He is thought to have learning difficulties.Locals said they had seen a red car parked 'inappropriately' near to the Widdecombe house.

Ann Widdecombe joined the Brexit Party after retiring as MP in 2010, then became a spokesman for Reform, and knew Farage since they were MEPs.

I read that a garage owner reported a dark VW Golf parked suspiciously about 9am that morning with a man aged 25-30 tying his walking boots.

Cossy I have never seen you be either uncaring or disrespectful.

I second that ✅

Yes she didn't agree with gay marriage, she was deeply religious, she held views that seemed outdated

However she did have gay friends and supported gay parliamentary candidates I heard yesterday.

She was close to quite a few gay men - several of them have talked about this on air over the last day or two.

I disagree with alot of what she championed but nobody deserves to be murdered.

Just out of interest, where did you get your info re the suspect from? It’s just that I’ve googled and cannot find such detailed info?

That really does sound premedidated and targeted.

It does to me too. And disproves my thoughts on the suspect being local and fleeing up north, something I suggested earlier.

Most peculiar but I'm confident the police will get to the bottom of it.

Cossy Sun 12-Jul-26 17:07:26

However, according to the BBC “ “Police investigating the alleged murder of Ann Widdecombe say there is "nothing to suggest it was politically motivated".
Devon and Cornwall Police added they are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death, following the arrest of a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday.”

Thank you flowers

Sadly some will disagree with you, but I do strive to be balanced, as I think the vast majority on here do too.

And I hope it really isn’t a political grudge, there’s too much violence directed at MP’s as it is.

This thread is about a 78 year old woman being brutally murdered in her own home. Despite how anyone feels about her politics her violent death should be the focus here.
Best to leave disagreements aside.

Yes, of course, you’re right.

I, for one, would apologise to anyone on this thread if they feel I’ve been uncaring or disrespectful.

Happy to put my personal opinions aside and hope this vile person is apprehended very soon.

Oreo Sun 12-Jul-26 16:22:42

Yes let’s get back to the topic in hand.
I hope for everyone’s sake this case is solved quickly.
