Not everyone hates Sir Keir Starmer

Well done!

*”Sir Keir Starmer has been awarded the Légion d'honneur (Legion of Honour), France's highest national order. French President Emmanuel Macron presented the historic award in recognition of Sir Keir’s "personal leadership" in European security and the creation of the Coalition of the Willing to support Ukraine.

Sir Keir is the first serving British prime minister to ever receive the award. Macron bestowed the honor during a ceremony in Paris, noting that he found Starmer to be a "very reliable and friendly partner".*

Great analysis there in the text.

I like.

Emphasis on...reliable,

The dangers of over fracturing, the ability to unite despite difference

Safe - in the face of SM dangerous excesses including isolation

The aim is to serve democracy- rather than undermine it, and discourage/curtail/stop divisive, fake news and toxicity.

We've seen how false rumours triggered Lucy Connolly to incite racial hatred. We've read an apology from Tommy Robinson today apologising for getting his facts wrong and stating false claims on his sm feeds claiming a Glasgow man was viewing children in a park inferring paedophile type activity thereby ruining that person's reputation and standing in his community based on false information.

This toxic culture and promoting of false and fake news is very damaging to democracy and society and anything that helps stop it is welcomed in m book.

Bring it on 🤗

He has already arrested elderly people including a priest in her 80s and vicar on terrorism charges for protesting the ongoing genocide. The right to protest is enshrined on law.

Then no jury trials.

Now going further the green paper restricting independent investigative journalists from holding power to account. This is what is intended this is not democracy.

LemonJam Wed 15-Jul-26 19:51:44

I don't share your view that the proposed paper will restrict high standard independent investigative journalism. It seeks to strengthen and protect democracy and high standard, fact based journalism.

Probably better to wait and see the detail.

Légion d'honneur (Legion of Honour) yesterday and a very well received speech at PMQs today- well done Sir Keir.

I thought Keith Starmer's speech at PMQs today was kind and honourable. It was heart warming to see so many standing and cheering him on at the end- including a number on the opposition benches- and Lindsay Hoyle also shaking his hand.

It hardly needs translating! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
PS I would have been very surprised indeed if the Speaker of the House had not shaken the outgoing PM’s hand!

Good grief. They never fail to disappoint.

Doodledog Thu 16-Jul-26 08:56:58

Who?

Well said , Doodledog. I do believe that the determination of the media to oust Keir Starmer was at the root of the problem. It is as if the public were spoon fed with sound bites, over and over again. We shall never know what the end result of Keir Starmer's overall goal will be. I'm sorry he wasn't given the chance,

Good grief. They never fail to disappoint.

They were showing respect to somebody who did his best. The same respect was shown to Rishi Sunak, who also did his best. What would the world be like if people stopped being human and recognising that on their departure.

Galaxy Thu 16-Jul-26 09:41:31

I meant the proposed green paper with regard to the media.

We know only too well the innate damage the media can do.

It’s largely thanks to the media, and some easily led public, which led to the Southport riots when Starmer came to power, damned if he did act, damned if he didn’t. He did act, swiftly, and was damned.

The media has very much spread and applauded the rhetoric of Farage, his links with GB, X and various other media outlet, including that owned by himself, has resulted in the explosion of Reform, very much due to exploitation of people’s perceived fears and anxieties around migration.

I do not wish to see either the freedom of investigative journalist curtailed, nor free speech, nor our right to peacefully protest.

However, what people need drummed firmly into their minds and to understand is that alongside these freedoms comes great responsibility.

Responsibility to act and report honestly and with integrity, responsibility to consider what one’s actions and speeches might “trigger” in all people and the consequences of such actions.

Galaxy Thu 16-Jul-26 09:43:03

It appears to be all they know, the reach for control, that type of authoritarian approach has already contributed to many of their problems.

Apologies, I thought you meant the reaction yesterday to his departure.

Galaxy Thu 16-Jul-26 10:16:44

Me being vague as always casdon, my fault not yours.
I thought the tributes etc were dignified and respectful.

Dreadful Prime Minister. Macron loved him because Starmer has given him millions to stop boats.

Barbadosbelle Thu 16-Jul-26 13:53:10

.

Congratulations - he can be in the wonderful company of others who've received it in the past. e.g....

Vladimir Putin
Bashar al-Assad
Manuel Noriega
Harvey Weinstein
Maurice Papo
Bonito Mussolini
Francesco Franco

So he's in good company. And you might onsider him to be worthy of your admiration - but not mine.

Well he did enough bowing and scraping with his best buddy Macron (who is on his way out as well) and trips to his beloved EU so I'm not surprised. He won't be getting any prizes or praise from most of the voters in the UK the most hated PM in my lifetime.

Oh, I can think of far worse PM’s in my lifetime.

Which are down by @ 40% I believe but it doesn’t seem to be newsworthy now that the long term plan seems to be working…

Peaseblossom Thu 16-Jul-26 14:13:27

He's an absolutely useless prime minister and has got us more and more in debt. How on earth does he think it's acceptable to borrow money to give to other countries?! We are in dire straits ourselves and should certainly not be borrowing money to give to other countries, which the British tax buyer has to fund.

Following his meeting with Mr Macron and the Coalition of the Willing, the outgoing PM announced his first attempt to rewrite history - a €90billion loan to Ukraine will be provided using borrowed money.

Announcing the loan, Sir Keir said: “Today’s agreement is the latest demonstration of the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine.”

The EU Commission used slightly different phrasing to announce Britain’s contribution, instead saying: “The UK will provide a fair and proportionate contribution to the costs arising from borrowing, commensurate with the value of contracts awarded to UK companies.”

The costs of the agreement are undefined and open-ended, with the loan only covering until the end of 2027, and only two-thirds of the money being used for defence.

Mmm Rayner's Operation Scatter them all over the country into HMO's and think we won't notice. How wonderful bet none have scattered next to her fancy new pad in Brighton.

I agree Starmer was absolutely useless.

Gango Thu 16-Jul-26 14:23:04

He has been a terrible ambassador for this country, he is weak and without a clear view other than self preservation. That’s why his view flip flopped so many times
He got rid of labour MPs that wanted the 2 child cap lifting (which is a ridiculous thing to do BTW) only to then push it through when it would appease the parliamentary Labour Party
No back bone or integrity- good riddance

Estrellita Thu 16-Jul-26 14:24:12

Well done Sir Keir. I am so pleased.

Casdon Thu 16-Jul-26 14:37:16

Zelenskyy has today awarded Starmer the Order of Freedom honour, which is the highest award for a foreign person in Ukraine. Far from being a ‘terrible ambassador for this country’ then, Gango, have you got domestic and foreign policy confused?
