Here’s what AI says!

Chancellor

Shabana Mahmood

Strong legal background, experienced frontbencher, regarded as a capable communicator.

Foreign Secretary

David Lammy

Extensive foreign affairs experience and international profile.

Home Secretary

Yvette Cooper

Considerable experience in home affairs and government.

Defence Secretary

John Healey

Deep defence brief experience and relationships with the armed forces.

Health Secretary

Wes Streeting

Has made NHS reform a major focus and has ministerial experience in health.

Business Secretary

Jonathan Reynolds

Well-established on business and industrial policy.

Energy & Climate

Ed Miliband

Longstanding expertise on climate and energy policy.

Education Secretary

Bridget Phillipson

Experienced in education policy and school reform.

Deputy PM / Housing

Angela Rayner

Justice Secretary

Shabana Mahmood or another senior legal figure (if Chancellor were someone else)

Strong legal credentials.

I would also want:

* A mix of experienced ministers and newer talent.
* Ministers chosen because they’re good administrators, not just effective campaigners.
* Clear accountability with relatively stable portfolios rather than frequent reshuffles.

One thing Burnham himself is often associated with is devolution and regional growth. If he became Prime Minister, I’d expect him to place particular emphasis on mayors, transport, housing, and local government, and I’d appoint ministers who share that focus.

Of course, there are many reasonable alternatives, and different priorities (economic growth, public services, defence, constitutional reform, etc.) would lead to different Cabinet choices.

Perhaps Burnham might make his own mind up. grin

I hope to heaven that the Chancellor isn't Mahmood after what he said about neoliberalism in his acceptance speech.

Me too MaizieD.

Perhaps we can all wait until Monday. At the moment it’s simply speculation which manages to agitate quite a lot of people!

A1 can but speculate at this stage. Starmer formally resigns at the Palace on Monday - then Burnham becomes PM thereafter.

On his return to Downing Street from the Palace, AB will assemble his cabinet and the announcement will follow- its his choice alone.

To make any announcement now would be jumping the gun in my view and somewhat presumptuous and disrespectful to KS and King Charles at the Palace. AB is not yet formally the PM - KS is until Monday.

AI is just picking up speculation and current and past appointments. Wait until Monday.

I think we can safely assume that Rachel Reeves isn’t in the frame.
Listening to the head of the CBI on the radio today who mentioned that she was talking to Andy Burnham early this year.
This is the head head of the CBI who warned Rachel Reeves that her tax hike would be death by a thousand taxes
Reading up on their relationship I don’t think there was any love lost there

Of course it is. It was just a wee bit of fun.
Terribly sorry.

No reason why we shouldn’t have a bit of fun😄
I find it hard to warm to Shabanna Mahood.
