So says Nadine Dorries who did hand back her severance pay of approx £17,000 whilst AR is refusing to give hers back. ND was given hers by mistake as those over 65 are not entitled to it but she did give it back.

This has been covered in all the papers and TV channels and I have yet to hear anybody say AR deserves to keep it.

Pretty impressive, I'd say.

She should pay back what she's not entitled to She made money on her council house anyway and then changed the discount available for tennants so they got less She didn't think like a labour rep low wages less chance of buying a house She just changed it

She’s nothing to pay back. She was entitled to the payment. This has been clearly explained several times on this thread. She bought her council house years before she became an MP and the changes the Government ( not her) made were long overdue.

AR deserves to keep it.

You have heard it from several of us now.
...And, Nadine Dorries did not!

To my mind, it is not Angela Rayners who is the scrounger, grifter and hypocrite of British politics. Nadine Dorries needs to look much closer to home. I do understand her choice of words though, as she’s employing the dead cat technique, much like this thread is attempting to do.

I quite agree Casdon

Labour are supposed to support the working class aren't they but conservatives brought council housing in and increased the discount which has changed people's life's for the better I thought Angela Raynor was over housing when she agreed to the discount reducing so quickly and quietly

You can get a job like she has and not be seen as a success what has she achieved she hasn't been seen to do a lot with her power Andy Burnham seems more likely to be a sucess

MissAdventure Tue 28-Jul-26 20:28:44

Not doing so well at this scrounging lark, is she?
Having to work, as deputy prime minister, too at one point.

You cannot get a job at that level without putting in the work to get there TakeThat7. Otherwise we would all have achieved the same.

Graphite Tue 28-Jul-26 21:18:17

... what has she achieved?

Employment Rights Act 2025 for starters.

Oh really! Just google...

"Council housing was first introduced nationally by government action through key figures Dr. Christopher Addison and David Lloyd George via the Housing Act 1919 (the Addison Act), though early local municipal projects had begun in the late 19th century" (DLG was Liberal of course)

"Dr. Christopher Addison was a member of both the Liberal Party and, later in his career, the Labour Party"

then

Maggie Thatcher destroyed social housing ripped it to shreds.
1980's.

Thank you Wyllow

Selling council houses to long term tenants who were able to afford it through saving wasn’t actually a bad idea on paper, like many things often are: like upping basic wages and piling on NI on employers or thinking that 50% of teenagers should go to universities , but good things on paper have bad effects and consequences in reality.
All governments are guilty of these mistakes.

Oreo Wed 29-Jul-26 08:17:55

All that councils did was sell, sell, sell and didn’t build any more houses.

Oreo Wed 29-Jul-26 08:20:00

I think the only lesson learned was not to build huge council estates which often became in later years ghettos of crime and nuisances.

Tuliptree Wed 29-Jul-26 08:40:35

You do know don’t you that councils were forbidden from using g tge money from the sales to build more houses? The reasons behind this were quite simple - Thatcher wanted a nation of property owners which she believed would mean a permanent Tory majority. Basically gerrymandering. In so doing, she set up the expansion of the private rented market and all the problems that have sprung from that. Like the privatisation of water, gas, electric she created so many of our present day problems. Just think the basics of a secure roof over your head, affordable energy and water.

Thanks Wyllow, Tulip and others for stating the history of Labour building and Thatcher wrecking council housing

Oreo Wed 29-Jul-26 08:44:24

Yes I did know that and therein lay the mistake of government.

Oreo Wed 29-Jul-26 08:47:07

Social engineering never works well, whether it was the sale of council houses or thinking that half of the nation’s teenagers should go to university.

Your post gave a very different impression by omitting the point that councils couldn’t use the money to build. Omitting incredibly salient facts is one type of misinformation and could be seen as deliberately misleading.

Tuliptree Wed 29-Jul-26 08:52:48

Quoted wrong post but I’m sure people get the point

Yes I did know that and therein lay the mistake of government.

If you did know that why did you repeat the complaint that councils didn't build more houses to replace the ones they were obliged to sell at below market price?

It wasn't a 'mistake of government'. It was deliberate policy, as Tuliptree explained at 08.40.

What is to be deeply regretted is that Blair didn't reverse the policy when he had the opportunity post 1997.

Oreo Wed 29-Jul-26 08:58:29

We shall have to see what AR manages to achieve with council houses building but if Labour doesn’t get back into power at the next GE my feeling is that not many will be built.
Thankfully with Labour now up in the polls because of AB as the new PM they now have a good chance.😃
