Yet another seemingly Walter Mitty character but this guy has gone far seemingly unchallenged …… until now.

Reminds me of The Emperor’s New Clothes story. šŸ˜‰
His claims are absolutely laughable.

The story is in all the newspapers and channels but am linking Wiki as whichever link is added, some people will ridicule it.

I have read comments from former students. Not at Cambridge.
Can't remember where I read it now. There is something out there including reddit etc. Basically they said he turned up v late sat on a desk and rambled n about his experiences.
No use at all for their course.
And he left early.
I think another lecturer had to take on the classes.
I'm guessing there's been a pattern of good references to get rid of him. Let somewhere else have to cope with him. He's had jobs at various places.
I think the one I read about was at Roehampton.
He claims to have a Master's from KCL inter alia. I doubt that.

Here are the comments on Reddit.
I laughed at the student who posted that this Walter Mitty character told the class that he had invented the question mark šŸ˜‚

I would be interested to hear what the students who attended his lectures and tutorials felt/thought about him . When I was a student we all had one specific lecturer who was our tutor/mentor/father figure . We were often invited to their homes for dinner , meet the family etc . Mainly because we were young and away from home for the first time ( I'm talking about 64 years ago šŸ˜). I wonder if this is a similar set up at Oxbridge ?

I dont understand why his family did not intervene.
Perhaps they tried to.
They must of known that some of his many claims were untrue.

All on the gravy train. He was earning a lot of money. I’m sure they were laughing at the stupidity of these universities.

Why are we surprised it's all a big club for those who think they are intellectual, gravy train, champagne train more like.

Okdokey08 Fri 07-Aug-26 11:18:01

The hype usually benefits these people in many cases, so I’m expecting, interviews on breakfast TV, radio and perhaps a movie.. from which this ā€œWalter Mittyā€ character will benefit. The organisation’s, and establishments will cotongue to hire these people without full checks, and even if there’s a hint of uncertainty, they won’t want to be seen to have overlooked, or messed up their own due diligence and processes. People get paid nowadays, no matter how capable they are, it doesn’t help that we are less willing to challenge ge something or someone due to colour, race or disability.

Agree eazybee
It’s also possible he believed his own story - no excuse of course

eazybee Fri 07-Aug-26 09:53:09

He was 37 when he was given the post of professor and unlikely to be living at home. I doubt if his family were aware of his claims and if they were, probably believed them.

Judging by the gazillions of pics of this Walter Mitty comprehensively plastered around the media his next appointment will be as a male mannequin with one of the major fashion houses, I shouldn't wonder.

Dedicated fibbers have a way of always landing on their feet.

They are not fibbers they are frauds because they get tens of thousands of pounds in grants and salaries not just UK qualifications, overseas qualifications can be bought easily.

eazybee’s post listing some known complaints from MA students at Cambridge are likely to be the tip of an iceberg. What a dreadful mess

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 07-Aug-26 08:11:08

Absolutely, Primrose. Following the scrutiny into Mr Jenkins career, teachers were required to produce concrete evidence of their qualifications and experience.
Prior to that, simply filling in the form was all that was required: there were no checks.
There was quite a scramble in my house locating all of the paperwork.
I can't believe that Cambridge University did not spot this fantasist

All the many aspects of all this will run and run.

eazybee Fri 07-Aug-26 07:35:46

Four MA students from Cambridge quoted in DT today, claiming poor supervision.
1. Only one meeting, number of excuses not to meet, no substantive feedback on work, told he was outstanding, but received lower grade than predicted. Appeal rejected by University.
2.Student dissatisfied, asked to change supervisors; accused of racism, insisted, and given another supervisor
3.Undergrad, complained c. standard of Arday’s teaching 2023: scheduled sessions of I hour lasted only 20 mins; alternative supervisor arranged
4.Student told he did not require supervision only to receive lower grade than predicted.

This is dereliction of duty and very serious indeed. Students have only one chance, and Arday failed to supervise properly, thus ruining their chances.

Yes it was Roehampton.
There is a lengthy thread on Mumsnet about Arday, which I found interesting, with posters who have more recent experience of academia.

The man is the definition of a con artist. Obviously very good and now he is laughing all the way to the bank. He could be a Professor of Conmanship in the underworld. My husband was a Prof and he reached his position after many years of slogging and research and just damn hard work. This bozo undermines every Prof that reached their position the hard way. Shame on Cambridge and shame on the uni in Liverpool who gave him a PhD. Heads should roll.

.

And I just wonder who is paying the fees to Carter-Ruck, who are known to charge at least four times the rate of standard legal practices - @ (c) £400ph plus.

Mmm.
.

Carter Ruck are also known to offer deserving clients a Conditional Fee Agreement No win, no fee. No upfront costs.

They specialise in defamation and libel cases.

Many educational employers give good references to get rid of poor workers and troublemakers. I know and worked with one headteacher who gave glowing references to those he wanted out the door. Those he wanted to keep he wrote a glowing reference but usually followed it up with a friendly call to the head of the interviewing school. Whatever he said, those excellent teachers didn’t get the job and they stayed put.
It’s all a can of worms.

I actually worked alongside a young Indian teacher who gave his Father’s name as a referee when he applied for his first teaching post. He listed his name as he worked at his mini market.

He had probably the most common Indian family name so I guess the Headteacher or his Secretary did not think to check whether he was a relative. His father gave him a glowing reference and he got the job!

His teaching may well have been good?

Oh yes. But a lot maysee a way to get a refund on their fees.

And others a way to seek recompense fir a poor grade.

It’s the era of the grifter😬

Apparently.

It occurs to me that students under his tutelage and supervision, particularly those who were disappointed by their results, may now be gearing up to sue the College or University for not providing adequate tuition.

Oh what a mess this academic institute has got itself into.

Good point Lathyrus3.

I have not seen a single comment from any former students about his teaching have you? I find this a bit strange.
