Vertical Drinking

So I see Westminster council are trying to bring in rules, so that people can only sit down whilst drinking. They want people to order drinks on an app.

The whole idea of going drinking in a pub is to socialise & meet new people, especially if you have been working hard all week.
I don’t drink now, but back in the day when I did, that was the best thing about it, standing having a chat & laugh! I’d go to the loo, meet another bunch of people stood talking & join in if I knew someone in that crowd, ‘it’s called socialising’.
I met my future husband whilst stood at the bar. If I had of been hemmed into a corner I would never have met him I am sure of that.
If you want to sit in a group that is also fine, but most people are happy stood in their little groups.
The pub trade is already suffering & dwindling. So why can’t the government just leave well alone.
I didn’t catch why, but heard flats over pubs mentioned.
Easy one just don’t buy a house, flat near a pub. End of.

And created a storm in a beer glass!

No wonder people leave this site or rarely post anything.

Tuliptree Sun 09-Aug-26 13:32:13

Well that’s a huge assumption

Not so, it was done in a scornful way by a few. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out that it was Westminster Council rather than the government. It’s possible to correct people in a pleasant way, without scorn or trying to embarrass an OP.

😂😂😂😂

I see that only correcting posters in a pleasant way is not to your taste then, which isn’t really a surprise.
However maybe think how you would feel if it were done to a thread that you started and made a slight mistake.

Especially in the new Reform councils.

Perhaps, but often in Labour Lib Dem led and Conservative too.

‘Some could start a fight in an empty room! Even when sitting down.’
Well you would know Oreo

Especially in the new Reform councils.

But regional governance is totally different than giving it to one very local council, which is the case in this example.

I wouldn’t give any more powers away Wyllow3 when I see the waste and incompetence.

It would come under the whole of London I presume.

I'm not "wriggling" at all.

I merely stated a fact.

You are wriggling -normal parlance is the government ( for central government) and the council ( for local authorities). If I had a problem with my la I wouldn’t say ‘I’ve got a problem with government’

I'll go and chew this over now with some Wriggly's chewing gum!

On the other hand I think most of us knew what the OP meant anyway.

Yes we did, local government. I do wonder about the wisdom of giving even more autonomy/ authority to them, which at the moment is Andy Burnhams idea.🤔

This is a misleading News and Politics thread as the OP provides incorrect information ie "so why cant the government leave well alone".

Posters have picked up on this and highlighted the inaccurate information in a straight forward way.

I've no need to wriggle as I didn't make the original statement confused

No I said it. I made the mistake of saying government when I actually meant local government.

So I see Westminster Council are trying to bring in rules

First line of the OP, referring to council not government, MaizieD

Councils are Government.
Local Government rather than Central Government.

I am not stupid.

I know that councils are 'local government' but they are not The Government which the OP is complaining about.

Do stop trying to wriggle around this. It is absolutely bl**dingly obvious that this sentence So why can’t the government just leave well alone. does not refer to Westminster Council.

I am sorry Lemonjam, it was harsh of me!

It's clickbait. Don't waste time on this non- story.
