Vertical Drinking

So I see Westminster council are trying to bring in rules, so that people can only sit down whilst drinking. They want people to order drinks on an app.

The whole idea of going drinking in a pub is to socialise & meet new people, especially if you have been working hard all week.
I don’t drink now, but back in the day when I did, that was the best thing about it, standing having a chat & laugh! I’d go to the loo, meet another bunch of people stood talking & join in if I knew someone in that crowd, ‘it’s called socialising’.
I met my future husband whilst stood at the bar. If I had of been hemmed into a corner I would never have met him I am sure of that.
If you want to sit in a group that is also fine, but most people are happy stood in their little groups.
The pub trade is already suffering & dwindling. So why can’t the government just leave well alone.
I didn’t catch why, but heard flats over pubs mentioned.
Easy one just don’t buy a house, flat near a pub. End of.

Saw a notice in a bar in Brighton. No vertical drinking. Thought it was a joke. Presumably not. Didn’t like the place, anyway.

Please stop using acronyms. I get the DD, DS, DGC etc. but what is N & P?

MaizieD yep 👍🏻

There are multiple options of how to correct a post that is erroneous, without being nasty.

I hope I do not come over as officious, offensive or otherwise on here as that is not my modus operandi in real life.

No. IMO you’ve got a long way to go to catch up with any officious or offensive modus operandi.

I think a lot of the time people don’t grasp that we all live in ‘the real world’, but our worlds differ from one another.

Basing arguments on lived experience is fine, so long as it is acknowledged that one lived experience isn’t necessarily that of others. That’s when statistics are useful to show what is typical for everyone. Also, people have different tolerances of being corrected. Some take it personally and others see it as opening a dialogue - people differ and sometimes rub one another up the wrong way.

There are always posters willing to correct any erroneous information.

Blimey, GG13! You included...

Not that I object in the slightest to being 'corrected'. I'd rather not pass on misinformation or moan about the wrong arm of government...

☺️ it was interesting after all in the end and best option when venturing into the world of O/P's.

What? You mean the sun has the right to be there? Oh come on. Surely this can’t be right 😱

It’s getting ridiculous now on most N & P threads I really do not know why I bother…

It often seems as if some posters on N&P can hardly wait to tell you your facts are wrong, or if the facts are right . . .
then you’re wrong!
It’s a bit like the moon, who thought the sun
had got no business to be there
But we’re all entitled to have our fun in different ways.

And created a storm in a beer glass!
🍻

😂I certainly did

🥂🥂 yup, you did 😉.

But maybe in future just say something like, "I've heard that xxxxx is happening, its doesn't make sense to me"

Then it's a nice opening for a subject and someone else will dig out the details.

There are more on this site than you or me Tuliptree

Thanks for the info Oreo. Very helpful and I suspect probably accurate

You really don’t see it do you Tuliptree? There are ways of saying things when you want to correct misinformation, and post after scornful post about it is the wrong way.

I don’t see it as you do clearly. So what? I don’t see a lot of things the way you do and vice versa. I’m sure we can both live with that

GrannyGravy13 Sun 09-Aug-26 13:56:14

There is a newer thread with the same erroneous headline regarding taxing cash ISA’s

I thanked the poster who clarified the new tax law on the thread that I started. It is always wise to read beyond the headlines, and on that occasion I did not.

There are always posters willing to correct any erroneous information.

And why not? You posted wrong information about ISAs recently with a completely wrong thread title that was never corrected. Your post could have really alarmed people but fortunately others were able to correct it. What was wrong with that?

And some even do it in a reasonable way too, but not all.

Tuliptree Sun 09-Aug-26 13:47:32

I’ve just had a look through current N and P threads. I see nothing ridiculous about them but instead see important issues being discussed for the most part in an intelligent and informed way.

But you don’t have to bother - your choice. What I find ridiculous on N and P threads is the cavalier attitude towards facts and accuracy more often demonstrated by the right of centre

I've no need to wriggle as I didn't make the original statement confused

No I said it. I made the mistake of saying government when I actually meant local government.

Don’t worry, most posters knew what you meant😃 I can’t think many people mind drinkers standing up chatting, men especially seem to like standing in small groups with a drink in hand.

No wonder people leave this site or rarely post anything.

Their choice - no one has to stay or post. Can’t actually say though that I’ve noticed.
