Why the moral panic?

Thread after thread is started with the assertion that immigrants are arriving on our shores and will as a result almost certainly threaten our culture, values and way of life.

Obvious nonsense. But why?

Is it that the haters have to hate?.

Immigration will not stop and is almost certainly set to increase.
Given our failure to ensure adequate housing for our populztion, this is causi g real problems, as well as educational isxues etc. But on the plus side, we need the workers, especially as the demographics show that the inverse triangle is getting larger, year on year.

I am arguing thst immigration, is contributing to the housing crises, but the workers are needed in an aging society.

So stop the moral panic, and treat the issue with a level.of proper debate and levelheadedness it needs.

Sorry about crap post , im using my little phone.

Things on immigration were all perfectly fine before about 1998.
Then I think it was Blair who decided to really mess things about.
Changed multiple laws.

" Things on immigration were all perfectly fine "????????

You must have forgotten all about the 1950s , 60s and 70s when immigrants from the old colonies, West Indies and Pakistan were the targets of similar criticism by racists.

The concern about numbers is understandable. Their skills, background, criminal records and finding out about them is scrutinised in the application process- during which they must be housed.

How to stop them coming is a legitimate issue of debate but no country in the world has ever stopped asylum seekers seeking asylum.

Oreo Thu 13-Aug-26 10:23:54

It must be near impossible to truly assess their skills or criminal records if they destroy any paperwork and lie about their names, ages and country of origin.

Oreo Thu 13-Aug-26 10:24:47

There’s genuine concern about any man turning up here from Iran.

LemonJam Thu 13-Aug-26 10:25:50

The concern is genuine and understandable.

Well I’m Brenda from Bristol. I’m off

If no papers asylum seekers are in a less favourable position to establish their identity and case for asylum. They have DNA, finger prints and teeth - checks and interviews will be carried out and age assessments if necessary. All part of the application process and finding out about them.

To date fewer than 15K people have arrived in the UK this year by small boat. This is a drop of 43% compared with the same period as last year. This government is making more progress than the previous government did in 14 years, yet this seems to go unnoticed.
In the year ending March 2026, the UK recorded a total of 39,000 overall returns (including enforced and voluntary departures), of which roughly 11,900 involved individuals who had lodged an asylum claim. Under the specific "one in, one out" arrangement with France, 1,087 small-boat migrants were returned to France up to June 2026. (GOV data) This government is returning more failed asylum seekers than the previous government did in 14 years but again it seems to go unnoticed!

We need to build more houses, especially social housing. We need better infrastructure and better services that support our population when we are sick, old or disabled. We need people working and paying tax. We need better education for our children and more opportunities for our school leavers. Yet, some think that the decreasing numbers of people arriving by small boat are the source of the problems facing the UK. Well, they are not and if small boats stopped arriving completely, we would find nothing would change except the availability of a convenient scapegoat!

Yes you are completely right there. That’s why I stopped voting for the Tories.

MissAdventure Thu 13-Aug-26 10:47:22

Couldn't arriving sans paperwork mean very much less likelihood of being granted asylum?
Is that too simplistic, or not even practical, considering the process of finding out why someone may genuinely be without their documents?

If you read the OP without your subjective spin, you will find that I have agreed that immigration is a problem.

What I am arguing is that it needs to be dealt with a degree of levelheadedness, that is frequently not shown on these threads.
Instead stoked by people like Farage and the right wing media, choosing to panic about a group of people you have identified as a threat to our way life your reaction is so much greater than the actual danger

Don’t you ever watch anything other than the BBC?
If you look on YouTube there are loads of clips of these blokes coming on to our young girls.
Not just here but in other countries.
Fair enough they aren’t all bad people that are arriving. Also we have enough of our own criminals to deal with.
I watch the left & right news channels that gives me a clear view of what’s going on.

Just wondering what on earth moral panic means ? Sounds extremely strange and unlike anything I have ever come across before.

Ziplok Thu 13-Aug-26 11:07:19

Migrants that are either directly recruited by eg NHS or who come here via legal channels are welcome. These boatloads of young men with no paperwork are not.

I agree with this.

I wholeheartedly support immigration done through the proper channels, but not this.

However until and unless the cartels running the illegal immigration operations are stopped (and let’s face it, that is a monumental task, reaching the very top echelons of these cartels seems impossible, they just fade into the background, leaving their replaceable minions to face any penalties, plus it makes them huge amounts of money which they aren’t going to readily give up), then the illegal boats will just keep on coming, and unless we promptly turn these illegal arrivals back from where they came, it will never end.

I find some of the posts about Asylum Seekers here, both abhorrent and ignorant.

I have today posted on one the threads, the one about the “leafy suburbs” some facts and stats.

Some of you might like to read them, but I doubt you will!

I’d like to thank Farage, Lowe and their ilk, and our right wing sensational media, for constantly posting and re-posting divisive, fear-causing, non-factual or semi-factual stories about Asylum Seekers.

Opinions/beliefs/views are all absolutely fine, express how you feel, that’s fine, I get some of you fear asylum seekers and are anxious and worried, it’s not a nice situation for us or them.

Doesn’t alter true facts though.

The true facts are that most of us will never be personally affected by Asylum Seekers and in the great scheme of things they are not to blame for most of the issues we currently have here in our country.

Please use a little perspective.

I am not in any way excusing the disgusting heinous crimes committed by a small percent of our AS, I do not want these types here and I believe that they should be deported.

Ilovecheese Thu 13-Aug-26 11:14:05

The moal panic is being driven by the right wing media, so that anger is driven towards immigrants to deflect from anger towards the billionaire owners of the right wing media.
If immigration stopped completely, the moral panic would be driven towards benefit claimants.
It is divide and rule tactics.

Facebook and utube videos cannot be relied on to be truthful.

They already have, or haven't you noticed? 🤦‍♀️ Our high streets are awash with vape shops, betting shops, Turkish barbers, many of them are fronts for OCG and drugs. Andy Burnham is now struggling to get them closed down because it's threatening our way of life. Do you really not see what is going on before your eyes?

Cossy Thu 13-Aug-26 11:20:04

Btw WW2, I both applaud and agree with your original post, but some here have such ingrained beliefs I think the rest of us have to simply accepts that we respectfully disagree and never the Twain shall meet.

I know exactly where my moral compass sits, I’ve worked and met with AS and I bother to keep up with current stats and facts. Some will choose not too, and that’s their right.

I do accept these arrivals are a legitimate issue, but for me it’s more about the rich traffickers, the very few criminals but primarily the horrendous dangers these AS are actually in, not just in their home countries, but in their entire arduous and dangerous journeys. They put themselves in danger just attempting to leave their own countries.

I’m fully expecting some of you to state, “they should stay there” 😢 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
