Why the moral panic?
(202 Posts)Thread after thread is started with the assertion that immigrants are arriving on our shores and will as a result almost certainly threaten our culture, values and way of life.
Obvious nonsense. But why?
Is it that the haters have to hate?.
Immigration will not stop and is almost certainly set to increase.
Given our failure to ensure adequate housing for our populztion, this is causi g real problems, as well as educational isxues etc. But on the plus side, we need the workers, especially as the demographics show that the inverse triangle is getting larger, year on year.
I am arguing thst immigration, is contributing to the housing crises, but the workers are needed in an aging society.
So stop the moral panic, and treat the issue with a level.of proper debate and levelheadedness it needs.
Sorry about crap post , im using my little phone.

Ipsos also found 20% of Britons polled on 17/2/26 thought that the total number of people coming into the UK was "a bit too low".
Did Ipsos therefore find that 80% of Britons polled thought the total number to be too high??

No that was not the case.

Just for the record, in the 1980s about 4-6% of prisoners were foreign born nationals. Today it's 12% of prisoners are foreign born nationals. It may not sound a lot but that's 1 in 10 prisoners. That's a total of 10,500 prisoners who were not even born in the UK. And here we are releasing dangerous offenders back into the community.
I’m not clear what the last sentence has to do with the first part of your pist
It has everything to do with the first part of my post.
‘The foreign-born population in the UK has grown significantly since 1980, rising from roughly 3.1 million (around 6% of the population) to nearly 19% to 20% by 2025, driven by successive waves of Commonwealth, European Union, and post-Brexit non-EU migration.’
So you’re saying that proportionately there are less foreign born people in our prisons than the change in demographics since 1980 would suggest should be the case then. Okay.
The most registered boys name in UK last year was Mohammed followed by Muhammad. Draw your own conclusions
Muhammad was top for the second year running last year with Noah and Oliver making second and third.
Yes I have drawn my own conclusions thank you.
My conclusion is that the majority of Moslems call their boy child Mohammed and various spellings of that name. The native population choose from a myriad of names because we don’t have a cultural tradition of calling our children the same name. 10% of babies are Muslim approximately, obviously split between boys and girls. So if all boys born to native Brits were called Jesus, there would be 90% more of them.
That Muslims have cultural naming traditions for boys, honouring the Prophet Muhammad was my conclusion also Casdon. Brits don't have the same tradition.
Top names for girls in UK last year- Olivia, Lily, then Amelia.
There's a lot of variants as to the spelling of that name. I'm also wondering if there is a smaller pool of names Muslim people draw on. As well as traditional names used in the west, it does seem that a lot of new names emerge that are influenced by film and what famous people name their children. Maybe there is a stricture about what names Muslim can opt for. When I was growing up as a catholic, names had to be either a saints name, a biblical name or a virtue, that narrowed the field somewhat. I don't know if that still stands.

That’s what tolerance gets you.
I'm not hearing a great deal of tolerance.
Then you’re not listening .
Your opinion about how I should think yet again?

What is yours?
The latest ONS statistics.

There are still far, far more boys born with British or European names - which rather contradicts the Great Replacement conspiracy theorists like Matt Goodwin.

A few posters have shared their conclusions- do we match your conclusions Aveline?
Let's make this explicit
Some 8,000 ish boys named Mohammed, or variation on it in the lefthand column (no year label) with a small increase in the LH column.
As opposed to about 32,000 boys with a variety of 'British' names in each column
Sorry, ...small increase in RH column
Sorry, Maizie, that's 2022 versus 2023 which ONS say is the latest release.
I agree with Aveline. People who commented via legal routes are welcome. Those mainly young men, who come illegally by boat, are not.
Yes I understand that view- but what I don't understand is the suggestion Aveline put forward that UK can legislate in some way to force France take asylum seekers the UK does not want to process?
Who sets these 'rules'?
What rules?
Aveline
Who sets these 'rules'?
Which rules- what rules? It was your suggestion that the UK rqligislates so that France accepts asylum seekers the UK does not want.
I cant see how any country can force another country to accept asylum seekers it does not want to process.

I agree with Aveline. People who commented via legal routes are welcome. Those mainly young men, who come illegally by boat, are not.
They come legally as asylum seekers. The UK insists a person seeking asylum must be on UK soil and take themselves to Border Control to register their wish to make an asylum application. As we are an island and this is what the UK tells asylum seekers to do- they predominantly come by boat.
The dots aren’t being joined. Asylum seekers will get to the country they want to be by whatever means they can. They haven’t all got to the port by spending weeks or months in France, France is not the first European country they have travelled through, and they aren’t all coming to the UK from France. France has no more liability for these people than the UK does, it’s a totally fatuous argument to suggest they do.
It’s only by working together throughout Europe that the impact on migrant numbers can be achieved, so let’s quit the blame culture and step up to our national responsibilities.
I agree 100% Casdon 14.23. I do not understand why some posters feel the UK can choose not to process the asylum seekers seeking asylum in the UK and force other countries to take them instead. We do not currently take asylum seekers in the UK who wish to claim asylum in other countries.
Blame culture solves nothing- the UK does have national responsibilities as set out in law.
