How the media created Reform

I have always said tgat Farage and Reform have virtually been created by the media, which likes drama and polarities.
Today on the BBC news site there are SEVEN separate items about Farage and Reform.
Farage has achieved nothing ever, and yet here is our national news channel feeding his ego.

GG13 I do think he played the victim in that interview.
I agree with you that I would like to be able to vote conservative again but not with the present party.

Yes, and while he is perceived by his followers and maybe floating voters to being victimised by the establishment he and Reform will keep if not expand their support.

I watched Laura Kuenssberg interviewing Nigel Farage this morning.

I can see why people are taken with him and Reform, they are filling a vacuum within the U.K. political scene.

They give the impression of listening to the electorate and tell them that they will sort out their problems overnight if in a position to form a government.

He (NF) repeatedly said that he was not a compliance officer he concentrated on the party and getting elected. That he paid people to ensure that Reform U.K. operated within the legal framework and that the powers that be had it in for them as they were seen as political disrupters

Only after the findings of the current investigations will we know if anyone is guilty of the charges payed against NF and Reform.

In the meantime he will continue to work his magic on the disenfranchised people of the U.K.

I haven’t voted for Reform, I am still hoping for a return to what was Conservatism.

There are always hecklers but usually doesn't result in violence. I don't think violence can ever be condoned.
Several people attacked this young woman. Shame on them and on Farage for finding it amusing and inciting violence by chanting "Boring, boring".

They did at first look 'normal'.
Just some citizens attending the Conference of their chosen party, to hear the new policies.
But, is anyone saying that assault is a 'normal' reaction to heckling, when there is paid security to deal with it?

I am certainly not condoning it, but with what’s happened in the past, Charlie Kirk, MPs being attacked, murdered, maybe they just panicked.
Who’s to say it would not have happened at a labour conference!
You don’t know for sure.

Maremia Sun 06-Sept-26 11:11:23

Going back to the OP, perhaps recent media reporting of suspected illegality, and now this debacle at the Conference, could be their undoing?

I agree MaizieD, the assault, by the Reform delegates, seems to be what TV and now social media appears to have as the focus.

MaizieD Sun 06-Sept-26 10:54:31

for some reason the TV focussed on this episode.

Perhaps because the conference attendees joined in with beating up the hecklers? That's not a normal proceeding when hecklers are removed.

Anyone who thinks that the Reform rabble in those videos was a group of 'ordinary middle class citizens', MT63

They looked like very ordinary men & woman to me.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
As for Lee Anderson buying that chap a walking stick, it was a totally crass thing crass thing to say.

Incase that question was aimed at me about people around my way!
The area where I live is very nice. The families around here are all working, mainly professionals. People who run their own businesses, nurses, a firefighter police, including my husband, now retired, even a Gp man & wife around the corner.
What I do know that a lot are fed up with this government, the migrant crisis- those who have young families are worried for the future of their children.
But no, no knuckle dragging people.

I can say across a busy main road further up, are plenty of HMOs
It’s not an area I remember from the past.
Nice little terrace houses.
Doorsteps donkey stoned. Spotless garden fronts. Shame really as now
Gardens are full of rubbish, old sofas. Litter all over the place.
It’s disgraceful.
It area I now wouldn’t walk through.

Aveline Sun 06-Sept-26 10:44:10

It's hard to believe that anyone likes or trusts Farage.
In other news: hecklers have been carried out at conferences of other parties for some reason the TV focussed on this episode.

AGAA4 Sun 06-Sept-26 10:37:43

You are right MaizieD. They like and trust Nige so will stick with him.

MaizieD Sun 06-Sept-26 10:32:31

There are many reasons why many Reform supporters shouldn't vote for them. PIP and other welfare payments will be severely cut.

I don't think that that will bother Reform voters any more than warnings about Trump bothered MAGA...

AGAA4 Sun 06-Sept-26 10:25:28

Many people are focussed on "stopping the boats". Reform have promised that they will do this but their ideas are unworkable and illegal.

Maremia Sun 06-Sept-26 10:12:06

Actually Aveline, you may have 'nailed it'.
What does Reform give to 'ordinary voters' that other parties do not?
If this is 'evidence', of what you get from a Reform Convention, but not from other political conventions, then perhaps what Reform gives is rage?

Farage is playing the media game brilliantly every event gains him support a very large number of voters agree with his views, even worse a good section back Rupert Lowe.

The protesters were manhandled out of the room whether that amounts to assault the police will determine, but if you try to disrupt an event you will be asked to leave if you don't you will be ejected, kicking and screaming if needed. Allegedly there was hair pulling by others at the conference

I have seen hecklers carried off by security at Labour Conferences, positively dragged out when they wouldn’t go quietly.
If any Conference members attack them that’s a different story altogether.I expect it will be investigated.

Oreo Sun 06-Sept-26 10:04:43

The media didn’t create Reform, the other two large political parties did.
The media reacts and shows public opinion but doesn’t create it.

Unforseen consequence.
That delegate with the stick has now been named on Facebook. Situation has become more ugly.

No, trial by social media is NOT what most of us desire, nor do I wish to see this man vilified online.

He reacted as he did, he was wrong, security were wrong and so was Farage, they all need to live with their actions and face the legal consequences.

Not a social media war!

I'm the poster who raised the point that Reform seems to be addressing a perceived gap that the mainstream parties don't seem to. My comments were not directed at current or recent governing parties. It was meant more rhetorically. The boat people, large numbers of fit young men scare people. The apparent proliferation of Islam does the same. The ballooning benefits bill etc etc. I'm sure I'll be jumped on for daring to post this but I know I'm not alone.

You’re definitely not alone.

Maremia Sun 06-Sept-26 10:01:06

Not blaming you Aveline, they did all look 'normal', until the assault began.

I’m a pleased you used the words “perceived gap”

It’s ok for anyone on here to posts their own views/beliefs/opinions, thank goodness we do live in a delivery and do still have this and many other “rights”

Long may it last! flowers

Maremia I was looking at the people in the conference lobby not the few around the heckling woman. I try to look around issues not just the one the media focused on.
