Home Secretary says nearly all women who attempt to each UK in small boats are raped on their journey

Shabana Mahmood said this in a podcast interview on The Rest Is Politics.

We know it’s only a small percentage of women who do come on these boats and presumably she knows what she is talking about but if she knows this is happening why isn’t she doing more to stop the traffickers?

All very disturbing. The chaos at Gosport yesterday with another nearly 200 arriving on a mega dinghy is also very disturbing. No wonder the townsfolk are protesting.

No Primrose53. What I object to is posts deliberately designed to stir the pot, from the same posters, who are disinterested in informed debate about the reasons behind the migrant crisis and how the Western world needs to support both refugees and the countries from which migrants come. What particularly infuriates me is ‘send them all back to France’, and factually inaccurate statements like it ‘shows little signs of improving’.

winterwhite Mon 05-Oct-26 16:59:52

Yes, ‘on their journey’ does not mean that this is anything unique to the boats as such.
We don’t have the full context here. Did the Home Secretary go on to say how she can improve facilities for women and children once they arrive here.

Maybe others are just sick and tired of the very regular have a go at boat migrants threads thinly cloaked in concern. I certainly am.

Don’t read it then. Scroll past.

People who are genuinely horrified would be saying in their post that women should be fast tracked to seek asylum, to get them out of the situation they find themselves in. I won’t let threads like this go, or scroll on, why would I, when I disagree with posters.

Would you prefer nobody mentions the migrant crisis ever then? It is one of the most important current problems in the country and shows little sign of improving. Just a reminder that the Home Secretary started this!

Why don't these women settle in the first safe country they get to? Why don't the men? Why do they always come West and not East?

Luckygirl3 Mon 05-Oct-26 16:39:43

These traffickers are the devil incarnate. - they surely are - along with drug pushers.

I absolutely resent that remark. That is a horrible comment.

Thanks Graphite and others.
Safe legal routes are one of the answers.

Fallingstar Mon 05-Oct-26 16:23:59

Well said NotSpaghetti.
This is exactly what I was trying to say.

It is horrifying Primroseshock those poor women and what does it say about the men travelling with them angry.

If you look at the statistics it's not the men actually travelling with them.

Due to overcrowded conditions, lack of secure shelter, and total reliance on illicit networks to cross the Channel, female migrants are exposed to further harm even after they have entered Europe.

It's happening en-route.

People trafficking. Smugglers leverage physical dominance and control over transit points. Women often have no choice but to rely on the men operating these - who demand sexual favors abd/or money in exchange for transportation.
Taking "irregular" routes (because there are ^no safe ones^) - so no law enforcement presence either.

70 to 80% of women have experienced "some sort" of sexual assault by the time they reach Calais I think I read.

She cited this extreme level of violence as a primary reason why women represent a small percentage of small boat arrivals; the journey is so dangerous that families often send adult men or teenage boys first.

And don't forget that for some the journey is an extension of what they are fleeing.

AGAA4 Mon 05-Oct-26 16:03:55

It is dreadful that women are being raped and others brutalised on their journeys to asylum but I tend to agree with Casdon that this is just another way to moan about asylum seekers and make it about worry for women asylum seekers.

Casdon Mon 05-Oct-26 16:00:07

Casdon, to start with women and children should be offered safe and legal routes away from the traffickers.
People want to know why only young men appear to seek refuge, well now we know, and is not safer for them either at the hands of ruthless and armed traffickers.

Yes.

Aveline Mon 05-Oct-26 15:59:56

Yes the traffickers set it all up but they aren't the ones who decide to have a go in a rocky boat even though they know they're not welcome or to just decide to rape the women and even, as I saw last week, to throw a child overboard. Selfish men are the culprits. Selfish men. angry

Do you not want it stopped altogether ^Fallingstar"?

We can never stop it altogether because people are genuinely seeking asylum in some cases. But we can try to get rid of the traffickers and work with Europe to stem the number trying to reach the UK.
Numbers pre Brexit were much lower. Brexit caused the small boats crisis.
If we can, as Burnham has said, get back on board with the EU with certain policies that helped us without rejoining which would be way too expensive anyway, there could be a return to pre Brexit numbers which is preferable.

Graphite Mon 05-Oct-26 15:55:26

Women (and children and men) have been trafficked for centuries. It isn’t anything new and it isn’t anything one woman working for one administration can fix.

If the UK can negotiate something with the EU over the new AMMR to establish legal routes to the UK, that wouldn’t stop trafficked women being raped before they arrive in Europe.

The thing the UK can do is be compassionate to the women who do make it to these shores (4,300 last year to June 2026) and help them to have a better life rather than being terrified by bunches of flag-waving, balaclava thugs.

Fallingstar Mon 05-Oct-26 15:53:59

Looking for workable political solutions that can avoid the deaths at sea and rapes of women is better than simply banging a drum.
Safe legal routes and cooperation with our European neighbours will be better.

fancythat Mon 05-Oct-26 15:51:06

I pray it all stops.

There is hardly any average Joe left, who doesnt want it stopped now.

Apart from whoever really runs Countries.
Monied people and Countries, who give money to those Countries who are in debt.

Some of us are horrified that women are being raped.

What on earth do you mean some of us?

What are you expecting? That the Home Secretary can stop worldwide trafficking and rape?

Trafficked women (and men) are raped irrespective of where they are trafficked to.

Epstein files anyone and why Trump is refusing to release them all?

Until the traffickers are caught and dealt with harshly sending out a message to any others doing the same thing, this will continue, the traffickers are gangsters who have no moral compass so am not surprised at all that heinous and depraved crimes are occurring. I imagine male and female migrants will have been brutalised and robbed of everything they possess before getting on an overcrowded dinghy.
Medicine without borders is operating in the UK treating migrants with PTSD and other mental health difficulties as well as physical wounds sustained from being gun whipped and raped.
Legal routes must be opened with the help of our European neighbours to prevent the gangsters operating.
