Cash, should we have some on us?

Following on from government warnings about having enough food and water etc. It seems likely that we may need cash too. I should have got some when I was in the bank the other day but will make a point in doing so next time I'm in my local town. Do you have a stash? Like most, since Covid I rarely have it on me now, bar some £ coins. I think there's definitely an argument not to become a cash free society.

Any views on the matter and your thoughts on how much an individual should have available in readies?

Mind you AI might wipe us out so won’t really matter will it 😩

Yes absolutely have cash!
As I have said in the past supermarket terminals have been down, I’ve been lucky & been able to pay.

I have a cashbox, and there used to be £500 in there, but we spent some of it recently and I haven't got round to replacing it. I usually take £100 out when I use a cashpoint, and these days it tends to last for ages as I pay with card or phone, so the chances are there would be cash in my purse, too.

I agree that it's probably a good idea to be able to pay for food and fuel for a while, just in case.

The OP was asking about cash in your home MOnica.

Had rather a busy time recently, so have given the matter a passing thought. I have always shopped on a 5 week cycle so I always have a good stock of tins and packets in and I stock the freezer around a 3 month cycle. So food isn't a problem.

I have a wood burning stove as in our previous house, but there we had a large wood shed and bought in bulk every summer. Where I am now, I have only limited wood storage, but will see if I can get some extra in. I have a battery operated radio, but I think my power pack needs replacing. Torches a plenty, just need to check on batteries.

As for water, we, now I, are on the 'vulnerable register and when the hose ban etc was announced we had a delivery of 2 doz 2 litre bottles of water. These have been put aside for emergencies.

I’ve got about £500 give or take. I don’t particularly count it just stuff it away and add a bit now each week. I don’t run a car so no petrol to buy.

I keep a stash in my apartment. I didn’t used to but with the threat of cyber attacks I think it’s sensible now to do so.

BlueBelle

Not everyone is able to have extra means of cooking etc if there’s a problem I ll eat cold food and manage fine
I totally refused to get worked up over saving stuff …I will survive

At last 😂 Someone with common sense 👏👏👏👏

I live in Germany. Cash is still very much the default here. I usually take €300 out and feel uncomfortable if it gets below €50.

MaizieD Thu 22-Oct-26 20:16:08

I've a cash stash, always do.

We cook with bottled gas anyway.

Have a woodburner which will do the heating.

Plenty of torches

I think we'd cope.

Well I am going to be the first to perish in the zombie apocalypse then.

kittylester Thu 22-Oct-26 20:07:24

As far as cash goes we always have some smashed away in the house and I always have some my purse. Some shops round here prefer cash for items under £5 and we tip in cash. DH doesn't carry any.

MawsRosie Thu 22-Oct-26 19:57:55

Well said BlueBelle 👏👏👏

Sago

We always have £200 in cash, although I think we may have to increase that as the cot of filling up our cars is £100’s.

I am making sure we are disaster ready, wind up torches and radio, loads of wood/coal, power banks and a good store of food.

We can cook on the wood burner and have a BBQ

So my answer is yes plenty of cash is needed.

I actually think your approach is very sensible.

Cossy Thu 22-Oct-26 19:27:24

Simply put, yes. I try to always have a couple of notes and some loose change, though I very rarely use cash these days.

Fallingstar Thu 22-Oct-26 18:35:14

We always have a small stash of cash in the house. I don’t carry any though, just have cash for a local taxi company that will only take cash, though mostly use uber now anyway.

PamelaJ1 Thu 22-Oct-26 18:25:44

Of course.

Shel1951 Thu 22-Oct-26 18:16:08

Always have cash, hardly use it except forthe rare occasion I need it .

Casdon Thu 22-Oct-26 18:14:13

Yes, I have enough in cash in my purse to pay for a weekly supermarket shop, having had the internet link to the tills all crash in my local supermarket, only cash tills worked for the whole day. I also keep change in my car because I’m fed up with signing up to umpteen parking apps, only to find I don’t have the right app for that particular carpark. At home I keep a very well hidden stash for emergency use. I think you need enough to buy everything you need for about two weeks, because if the banking system crashes that’s probably how long it will be before everything completely returns to normal.

GreyKnitter Thu 22-Oct-26 18:13:28

Never have my quantity of cash. Just enough for tips etc. I always use my phone to pay.

Esmay Thu 22-Oct-26 18:12:58

I don't keep much cash ,maybe I ought to.
I certainly have developed a siege mentality-I've stocked up on tinned food and milk powder .
There's candles and pain killers .
At this rate I'll be creating a shelter in the garden ....

Oldnproud Thu 22-Oct-26 18:09:42

Same as GrannyGravy13.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 22-Oct-26 18:03:21

Always carry cash, as does DH.

Always have an amount of cash in the house also.
