How free is our speech?

Interestingly there is a large group of labour MPs who now think that Cooper overstepped the mark in proscribing PA, it is thought that this might well be revisited.

It has been brought to court as a test case for freedom of speech.

I will be interested in the arguments. I am largely on the fence with this, but I think suppressing speech should be done with the lightest of touch.

About the same level as her books.

Better to have left the reading public to express their views with their purchasing power.

I agree!!

Sally Rooney was not stopped from speaking about Palestine.

Her books were withdrawn because she was donating royalties from her books to Palestine Action.
Under UK counter terrorism law passing royalties or financial earnings to a proscribed organisation is a criminal offence.

Her freedom of speech was not curtailed.

I think it seems to depend on who is speaking and what they’re saying.

I have no issue whatsoever with both speaking freely (and at times bluntly), whilst keeping within our relatively new Hate and Online Laws.

That’s my take on things these days and I truly hope all law abiding citizens feel they still have the right to free thoughts, freedom of speech and to peacefully protest.

These are rights we should feel comfortable exercising.

This is simply my own perspective and anyone is free to disagree.

Entering the Age
of Censorship
(For Sally Rooney)

They always come for the one
Whose light is on
And who speaks truth
About a people being effaced.
They always come for the one
Who refuses to extend darkness,
In silence or in compromise.
They come after your livelihood
They come after your books
They don’t care how it looks
How it speaks a new tyranny
Sanctioned now by the state.
What they do to one writer they
Do to all of us. Then in the danger
Of these times no one is safe from
Those who prefer silence about
The daylight bombing of children
And the endless tears of mothers.
We have entered the age
Of informal censorship. Let
Us no longer pretend
That we’re living in truth.
Unmentionable deaths
Stain our souls with blood.
The light of democracy died
A little when they pulled her books
Off the shelves, because she
Wants more justice
In this cowering world.
They are coming for you,
Friend, if your light is on.
