I cannot understand how he did this with hands handcuffed behind his back. All very puzzling and desperately sad,

Greyduster Sat 26-Sep-20 09:43:03

It’s shocking. More so because I believe he was due to retire soon. My heart goes out to his family.

The sad and tragic death of a serving police officer, who was only weeks away from retirement. I just can't understand how this happened.

biba70 Sat 26-Sep-20 10:26:53

Desperately sad and concerning too. But as Lucy says- how on earth could he use a gun with his hands in handcuffs behind his back ?

Jane10 Sat 26-Sep-20 10:28:10

Desperately sad. He had so much more to offer the world than his killer did. flowers

Apologies for the incorrect spelling in OP it should read Sgt Matt Ratana

LauraNorder Sat 26-Sep-20 12:29:18

RIP Sgt Matt Ratana.

EllanVannin Sat 26-Sep-20 12:42:05

The perp. would have been handcuffed from the front, but why he wasn't searched I don't know seeing he was " known " to the force.

It was bad enough seeing the widow of the late Andrew Harper speaking on the news the other day. I could have cried for that young woman.

janipat Sat 26-Sep-20 15:14:17

Can I suggest that the speculation desists until the facts are known? The arresting officers and the custody staff will be traumatised by this horrific incident. The whole police family are in mourning, my son phoned this morning quite distressed for everybody concerned. RIP Sgt Matt Ratana

The 23-year-old fired the gun with his hands still handcuffed behind his back hitting the veteran officer allegedly several times in the heart at point-blank range.

In the ensuing chaos the attacker's weapon went off again, wounding him in his neck, but he remains alive in a critical condition. The suspect is believed to be autistic and of Sri Lankan origin, according to The Times.

If any good can come out of this it will be in the form of higher standards of training for special constables.

ttgran Sat 26-Sep-20 16:03:26

No words can express the loss of a man just doing his job on the front line
RIP to Matt

Millie22 Sat 26-Sep-20 16:33:24

So incredibly sad ... just no words.

sodapop Sat 26-Sep-20 16:42:04

So very sad, another good man killed whilst protecting the public.

I understand the gun was hidden on the attacker's body where a personal search would have to be carried out to find it, he managed to get to it even though his hands were behind his back. I'm not going to comment further until the details are known.
RIP Matt Ratana
