No surprise that their symbolic referendum returned a vote to leave the UK. It won't make one jot of difference but it doesn't hurt to let AB know how strongly some people feel about the imminent arrival of 1,500 migrants on the doorstep of a village with 350 inhabitants.
AB has said there needs to be fairness in where these migrants are housed and says the boat arrivals are at a 7 year low. Boy, is he missing the point. Reduced boat arrivals or not, what many people are appalled at is the length of time it takes to vet those already here and the areas chosen for them to live while they wait are often inappropriate.
I really feel for the Piddington residents, especially women and young girls.

It is a familiar racist trope that men from a group singled out for racist views are more inclined to rape and sexually abuse white girls/women. Before the civil rights movement in America black men were believed to be predisposed to rape and sexually abuse white girls/women.
And of course some men from other races/religions do rape and sexually abuse girls/women, but as with white men, they are in the minority but their cases are widely publicised and made to sound like the norm. They are said to be less civilised, not like us, not sharing our values, unable to respect women in the same way. As if our superiority is a given despite our jails being full of our own homegrown male rapists and abusers who somehow missed the memo about being more civilised etc.
Whenever I have been out late at night and I haven’t been out late for a very long time, but I can recall feeling scared and clutching my keys in my hand as a weapon, when hearing footfalls behind me, and turning to see a man following closely behind. I never checked to see if that man was a different t race, he was a man, and as all women know, any man is capable of rape etc.
Statistics show that most rapes and sexual offences are committed by men known to the victim, a much smaller number are committed by strangers.

Well I for one haven’t even suggested that that these men are going to go on a sexual rampage.
But I do expect they will want a girlfriend. Why else are the NHS handing out free condoms (if that is true).

If you don't think that 'these men are going to go on a sexual rampage' what is wrong with them wanting girlfriends? It is a natural tendency among young people.

Is this some sort of post Empire Memsahib belief that nice white Englishwomen shouldn't have anything to do with 'natives'?

Anyway, looking at the Piddington demographics it doesn't seem very likely that they'd find 'girlfriends' there.

Cossy Thu 17-Sept-26 13:42:28

MazieD Many of them, according to research, have wives or partners and children back home.

Others might actually be so traumatised by the events in their home countries, perhaps girlfriends are the last things on their mind.

I know, and acknowledge, that groups of any young men, irrespective of their nationality, are likely to “catcall”, “whistle” and generally discuss attractive young women. This is pretty normal.

MaizieD Thu 17-Sept-26 13:45:34

This happens with the posters who say the UK could return immigrants pre Brexit when in fact very few were apparently returned.

Perhaps very few were returned is because, as has been pointed out, pre Brexit there were very few coming in to start with...

True, we don’t have access the the “eu” database but we do share intelligence with Interpol and eu nations.

Peacelilydilly Thu 17-Sept-26 14:11:05

I'd like to point out that some of these men are undocumented we know nothing about them, if they have criminal records etc. I think it's disgraceful that they are just allowed to roam whether they like and yes I agree with a previous poster some people are very naive, also someone mentioned had the soldiers who were in the camp before caused problems well that in my mind is deflection whether they did or not is not the point they were our soldiers not undocumented men we know nothing about.

It’s exactly the same narrative going on here, TheatreLover.

For over three years the asylum seekers who have been accommodated in former MOD barracks have not been a major issue. Crime rates are very low - much lower than Piddington, in fact.

In May, Reform took control of the county council and suddenly it becomes a big issue needing the employment of private security guards to patrol the streets. The police say it isn’t necessary. Local town and city council leaders say it isn’t necessary. The people say it isn’t necessary. The only people saying it is necessary are Reform based on no evidence whatsoever.

Here’s Rachel talking to James O’Brien.

Maizie Anyway, looking at the Piddington demographics it doesn't seem very likely that they'd find 'girlfriends' there.

Not unless their Tinder profile says: Seeking a woman 75-80 for matt bowls, whist drives, ballroom dancing and a maybe a sherry in the pop up pub every fourth Friday.

Apologies, but these people are making themselves look ridiculous with their silly UDI.

I wonder how they coped 20 years ago when there were 2,600 personnel at MOD Bicester, 1,100 military staff and 1,500 civilians.

I suspect some of those wanted a girlfriend too.

In other news, I see Reform’s latest Head of Policy, Amar Johal says fixing UK borders will take a full five years term - not 100 days as Farage claims.

Bets on whether he will last longer than Zia Yusuf or James Orr now he's handed Labour a ready riposte next time Farage pops up in the House of Commons to complain about boats.

Cossy Thu 17-Sept-26 14:29:06

I’ve come to conclusion that it’s a totally pointless “debate”, as never the Twain shall meet.

I will just point out though, that there are often extremely good reasons migrants (not just men), might no longer have their “paperwork” “ID”, sometimes, within their own countries, passports etc have been taken off citizens, not because they’re terrible criminals, but because those governments don’t want people leaving, some are genuinely lost, some are deliberately destroyed and some never had any.

Having ID or a document doesn’t prove whether you’re a genuine Asylum Seeker nor whether you’ve committed crimes in your country of origin.

I remember, historically, why certain groups “hid their identity” and/or paperwork, and why.

Maremia Thu 17-Sept-26 14:32:55

Some people prefer to ignore or forget history

MT62 Thu 17-Sept-26 14:36:18

That’s my point MAD, they will want a girlfriend so won’t be sitting around in Military army barracks if you read my post properly.
It’s up the the young girls if they want to court these young men, or not.

The entire cohort of asylum seekers being housed in the barracks will not be wanting to find a girlfriend. And it looks as though they're highly unlikely to find one in Piddington.

I think you're a bit obsessed with this...

Having military personnel there is a totally different thing.
Totally different to having a thousand men from different countries with different cultures I would imagine.

Yes It is a pointless debate, as you have your points of view, others have theirs which we are allowed to have.
Not everyone will agree with yours, or agree with my points of view Cossy.

Maremia Thu 17-Sept-26 14:58:59

Just read on Facebook, yes, I know, that the accommodation earmark for the asylum seekers held German POWs during WW2.

Fallingstar Thu 17-Sept-26 15:28:20

I realise people have their points of view, that’s the way it is, but several times on this thread and on others I am sure posters have outlined how the small boats issue could be hopefully dealt with politically. Indeed I went to pains to repeat what Ed Dave had said and what I am sure Andy Burnham will need to do. Others gave even more detailed information about how this came about and what could be done politically to help solve this problem, not altogether but at least so it isn’t as bad as today. However, these posts have been routinely ignored in favour of simply detailing how awful migrants are, without even countering with a workable and humane political solution.
Am sure it feels good to get things off our chests, but it seems those who shout loudest are just shouting. Nothing else.

Maremia Thu 17-Sept-26 15:47:57

You could be right, Fallingstar.

petra Thu 17-Sept-26 16:17:45

Meandrogrog
The driver of the truck knew what he had in his trailer.
He was part of the people smuggling gang.
Rotterdam where most of the trucks come from is practically run by European crime gangs.
When the boats do stop I believe the smugglers will revert back to Lorrie’s.
The only way to stop that would be for all trucks to pass through a scanner as they board.
Now we have come full circle as you have to trust the scanner operative who is probably on the take or is being threatened.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 17-Sept-26 16:23:18

petra yep 👍

Graphite Thu 17-Sept-26 16:34:41

Thank you Fallingstar. Davey is right.

I’ve been reading about how The Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (AMMR) will work particularly the solidarity mechanism which establishes a system to ensure a fairer sharing of responsibility among EU countries.

It’s real pity that people followed Johnson and Farage in voting to leave the EU, else we’d be part of this now.

As I understand it, it doesn’t mean the UK would have to apply to rejoin the EU as there are third-country precedents, Iceland, Norway etc but it would need a formal, negotiated treaty which would means signing up to the whole package, as it were, without a vote on future changes in policy.

It would seem to solve the issue of boats crossing from France. If the UK has been determined as the country responsible for processing those persons would be transported safely.

However, it still wouldn’t solve the problem of how to accommodate asylum seekers while their application is being processed, although the transit through the system should be quicker as some of the preliminary work will have been done in the Member State of first entry.

Nor would it stop the far-right demonising all asylum seekers but it would remove the faux concern expressed in Operation Fortress about safety at sea and put a stop to the targetted harassment of the RNLI and its volunteers.

Oreo Thu 17-Sept-26 16:58:31

My take on this Piddington business is that asylum seekers have to be placed somewhere and disused MOD bases are the best bet wherever they are.
When they are bussed into towns tho, Bicester presumably, I do wonder what they do not having much money.

petra Thu 17-Sept-26 17:05:30

Oreo They can walk round Bicester designer outlet village.
There’s enough shops to wander round.

Think you’re pretty much spot on!

What I meant by “pointless”, is not that people disagree with ME, I’m quite happy for people to have alternate views, beliefs and opinions to me, it’s what democracy is all about, it is what makes both life and people interesting.

What is “pointless” in this particular issue, is that people 1) don’t read others post, 2) even when faced with facts and stats from credible sources, people still harp on about the same thing, insisting that they are completely right and then tell everyone that everybody else feels the same way as they do.

If I post something and it’s my opinion, I completely expect many others to see things differently.

If someone on here posts facts or stats from one or more credible source, that’s not “an opinion”, it’s a fact.

We see this with all Asylum Seeker “discussions”, with many political discussions and even the RNLI discussions.

Some things are so firmly entrenched in some people’s minds, no amount of evidence, proof, facts or discussions will ever change that.

I’m more than happy to be told I’m wrong about something and to have someone give me a link or show me the way to their evidence and facts.

MT62 Thu 17-Sept-26 17:39:15

Yep Cossy, left behind in war torn countries we are led to believe 🙄

Peacelilydilly Thu 17-Sept-26 17:49:52

What kind of man would leave their women, children and old people behind in a country so awful they have had to flee it. Why not stay and make your home country better and look.after your family or are they just interested in themselves probably. In WW1 and WW2 men.fought for their country and their families.
