I was lucky enough to have 3 of my 7 children at home. I am shocked by the cuts to the midwifery services so that fewer visits are made during and after pregnancy. Equally, why is the status of the midwife being eroded and giving way to the views of inexperienced young doctors. Too much expertise is being lost.

Delilah, Its as if history is repeating itself. In the old old days (16th - 18th C) the midwife was demonised by the male doctors who made us lie on our backs for their convenience. There will always be cases when a full medical intervention is required but when all is going to plan I am sure a birth specialist (Mid-wife) is what most mothers would prefer. I can always remember the trainee doctor present at the birth of my 2nd child. He spent the whole time talking above my head (physically and metaphorically) to my husband about property prices. The birth was lovely inspite of him.....not because.

You're absolutely right. But today, continuity of care from the earliest weeks through to birth by one midwife is hard to come by, unless private care can be afforded. I was lucky to enjoy such care and to stay on my feet until delivery when having my 7th child in hospital.

Hello all
Two of my friends are midwives, one decided to leave because she couldn't cope with it any more, no not the patients - the paperwork! angry
Both were loved by the other staff they came into contact with, also by 'their mums and their babies' they could open a card shop with all the thank you cards and if all the chocs had been eaten probably WW best customers.
Both loved their jobs and loved helping others.
The changes made over the years have not been for the best - beware NHS you are loosing good staff, where to? The private sector of course!!sad
Love and hugs

Graniee.the dreaded paper work has seen many inspiring professionals leave.and not just in healthcare. I left pre-school education...(er I dont think I was that inspiring just half decent) because it was all about learning outcomes...planning activities and keeping records not getting down on hands and knees and supporting the childrens' learning through well directed play. I then kept bumping into folks who had also leftfor same reasons - from everything from University to Nursery...the conversations got quite repetative.
