So - rules are there are no rules, no insider footballer info needed - it's just who you think will win, lose or draw - like Paul the octopus in the last World Cup - this is using the brilliance of gransnetters (and CariGransnet's goldfish - named Goldie, of course) to predict who will win the World Cup.

Every morning we post the fixtures for that day for you to post your predictions.

You'll get a point for each correct prediction (win, lose or draw) and for those with a competitive streak, there will be a bonus points option suggested for the day, so you 'fancy' up your entry <ooh>

Every morning we will update our leaderboard, however you're more than welcome to join in at whatever stage. Obviously there's less chance of winning if you join in half-way, unless you're a pro and take part in the bonus rounds!

There will be a mystery prize for the gransnetters with the most points at the end of the World Cup (13 July).

Let the games commence! Post below if you'll be taking part from Thursday.

Damn,CROATIA out , still they tried hard with the Mexicans , suppose the heat got to them a bit .

Heyho.

LOL.

rubysong Tue 24-Jun-14 13:13:26

Posted a question on the Paxman Q&A at 13.09 but I have no idea how to make a link. (It says it will make a link automatically!! exactly how?)

Maggiemaybe Tue 24-Jun-14 12:44:43

happy shock. We've not had the street fair yet!!

Happy2Be Mon 23-Jun-14 20:40:06

Provided forecasts this morning.

Interesting facts:

Spain - The traditional Spanish Christmas dinner is 'Pavo Trufado de Navidad' which is Turkey stuffed with truffles

Chile - Cola de mono, monkey’s tail and the rompon are the famous Christmas drinks in Chile

Brazil - Christmas festivities go on until January 6th, which the Brazilians refer to as Three Kings Day

Croatia - Stuffed cabbage, sarma, Dalmatian pot roast, pasticada, walnut roll, badnji kruh (fresh bread), purica, smlincima and suckling pig form some of the main items of the Christmas menu in many Croatian homes.

Why am I talking about Christmas? Well, somebody has to be the first and as Midsummer's Day has been and gone, Christmas can't be far away grin

rubysong Mon 23-Jun-14 16:21:30

predictions
Spain, Brazil and Croatia to win, Netherlands/Chile to draw.
facts
Spain: Park Guell in Barcelona is a crazy place designed by architect, Gaudi.
Chile: In 2010 there were 33 miners trapped underground for 69 days and then brought to safety in a spectacular rescue.
Cameroon: Roger Milla scored 4 goals in world cup 1990 and in 1994 at the age of 42 became the oldest goal scorer in world cup history.
Mexico: There are 32 world heritage sites in Mexico.

May I predict:
Spain to win
Netherlands to win
Brazil to win
Croatia to win

And my facts are:
•Nobody has died from a spider bite in Australia since anti-venom was developed in 1979.
•There are over 1300 volcanoes in Chile, more than 100 still active.
•Life expectancy in Cameroon is only 51 years for men, and 54 years for women.
•When we went to Croatia, we visited four neighbouring countries and got so confused with all the different currencies that we didn't dare buy much because we couldn't work out anymore whether it was costing us 60p, £6 or £60.

Pittcity Mon 23-Jun-14 12:34:31

Spain, Mexico and Brazil to WIN. Netherlands v Chile DRAW.

MY FACTS ARE ALL ABOUT RELATIVES:
*My DH was born in Australia.
*My sister has in-laws in Croatia who run a farm!
*Charley's Aunt was Donna Lucia d'Alvadorez, a rich widow from Brazil, "where the nuts come from".
*Dutch uncle is a term for a person who issues frank, harsh, and severe comments and criticism to educate, encourage, or admonish someone. Thus, a "Dutch uncle" is a person who is rather the reverse of what is normally thought of as avuncular or uncle-like.

kittylester Mon 23-Jun-14 11:17:05

My predictions are

Australia to win
Netherlands to win
Brazil to win
Croatia and Mexico to draw.

My interesting facts are

We lived in Australia for a year - it's a very long way from home. confused

DD3 was stung by a wasp on a Dutch campsite - she cried like nobody's business. grin

I have never been to Mexico or Croatia sad

Yesterday I met my very first Brazilian person (that I can remember). She is the new partner of the godfather of DGD2 (keep up) She was fabulous and just as I imagined a Brazilian to be. Huge personality, huge voice, huge fun wearing colourful clothes and lots of jewellery. I hope they become permanent because the girls will be very lucky to have such a lovely and exotic person in their lives. sunshine

I appreciate that these are not really interesting facts but I, too, am running out of ideas!

KatGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 23-Jun-14 10:52:45

Belgium 1-0 Russia

Spain, Holland, Brazil and Croatia to win.

Happy2Be Mon 23-Jun-14 09:03:55

Holland v Chile - a draw

Brazil to win
Croatia to win

Charleygirl Mon 23-Jun-14 08:24:23

I seem to be working well with the goldfish. Still, 2 out of 3 yesterday is not too bad, considering my extensive knowledge of football is close to zilch.

kittylester Mon 23-Jun-14 06:17:32

Just checked my predictions and realise I missed the word draw off my USA/Portugal forecast - hope it was obvious! Because it was a draw!!!!
