The folks at Hellmann’s are looking for 10 gransnetters to take part in the Hellmann’s ‘Sandwich of the Century’ challenge as part of their Love Food Hate Waste campaign.

Here’s what Hellmann’s have to say, “For 100 years, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise has been at the heart of the greatest Sandwiches but did you know that every day we throw away 200,000 loaves of bread and are even careless with our fillings for example, nearly three million tomatoes, and one million slices of ham! At Hellmann’s, we love food and we believe eating should be a moment of joy. That’s why we hate food waste and encourage you to use your lovely leftovers!”

To celebrate Hellmann’s turning 100 Hellmann’s wants to challenge gransnetters to minimise the amount of food waste people throw out by using their leftovers in their sandwiches.

Those selected to take part will be sent some Hellmann’s mayonnaise along with a welcome pack. We’d love it if you could come up with your own ideas of how to use leftovers in a sandwich. Do you have a favourite sandwich you regularly make with your leftovers?

Testers will have to add their feedback and comments to a thread on Gransnet about how you found the Sandwich of the Century challenge and whether you felt you effectively used Hellmann’s mayonnaise and leftovers in your sandwiches.

Everyone who adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 M&S voucher.

If you’re interested then please sign up here.

Thanks and good luck,

GNHQ

I am a Hellmansaholic. I have mayonnaise with everything and get through jars of it. And, having just retired I'm trying not to waste any food at all.

We do use mayo a lot as a dressing and for sandwich mixes, nothing better than a nice bowl of soup & a sandwich for lunch or tea-time nice easy and very good on the budget.

They need to have a word with my son, he is always using up leftovers and mixing them with mayonnaise. His favourite is leftover stirfry and bacon with mayo, another is chorizo, camembert and sliced grapes. He will spread just one side, then lettuce, then grated elderly cheddar then leftover coleslaw. In the holidays he will eagerly await the cold chicken carcass and then add that to mayo and salad and sliced banana with maybe a little mango chutney. Maybe he should get a job in a sandwich bar. He's been gone for just over two weeks now and I look at the fridge and wonder what on earth to do with all the leftovers now he has gone. My mayonnaise bill will decrease hugely until he is back at the end of this semester.

Apple slices with hot bacon was another one.

Sorry but I don't like mayo! Have you tried leftover shepherd's pie sandwiches though?mmm...

grin No but I bet my son has. potato peelings, washed of course, are really nice deep fried and dipped in mayo, and deep-fried floured broad bean pods are even nicer. I do hate waste. Son came back from uni last weekend and I offered to cook him lunch on Saturday, he refused and preferred to rummage for weird sandwich fillings. Apparently elderly cheddar, damson jam and mayo are good. Why is there no Yuck smiley?

Yesterday I made coleslaw of sorts by mixing a grated broccoli stalk (a thick one), a small grated carrot, small amount of finely chopped raw onion, and a few quartered cherry tomatoes with Helman's mayonnaise. I thought there would be some left for my sandwich today but DH finished it all off.

we love Hellmanns with all of our leftovers especially on a sunday evening with what ever meat we have had on that day ie- roast lamb or chicken on a sandwich with Hellmann`s and crispy lettuce, yummy supper xx

My Gorgeous Dad would have loved this idea
He was from a very poor family (financially) and his Mother taught her children how to make a meal from almost nothing.

When I was a child and he and I had the house to ourselves we would make a pan of 'bread pudding'
It was basically old bread, milk and anything else that needed using up.
We made some terrible concoctions using the last scrapings from jars of jam, honey, fruit last bits of this and that, simmer it all in the milk and called it 'sloppy dosh'

I'm sure if there was a bit of mayo around it would have gone in too!

My Mother would arrive back with a horrified look on her face at what we were eating, but it was precious time with my Dad and I loved it.

mmmm I love the ends of cheese that have gone hard softly melted in a pan with some finely chopped up either cooked meat or quickly fry off chopped bacon with afew herbs( fresh or dried) thrown into the mix, allow to melt until soft (can add a small amount of vino -if there is any left!). Allow to cool a little and spread onto bread. Top with a mix of mayo and mushed up avocado or finely chopped mango or peach - sounds dreadful -try it! LUSHAROONY!! So many ppl have gone ugh and then I have made one and get the 'wow' - not very healthy admittedly but add a pile of salad into it too to relieve those guilty feelings! lol

These ideas sound great. Keep meaning to find something to do with potato peelings, they do seem such a waste. Will try some of these.
