We've been asked to look into how marketing is aimed at the over 50s age group and how over 50s and grandparents feel about it, i.e. any preconceptions that you come across, or perhaps things you like or dislike about how the over 50s market is targeted. We'd love to know your thoughts below.

We're allowed to name products and publications, aren't we? confused
It's never been a problem before...

Janerowena like your idea of the stamps towards the funeral plan, but feel I should get triple Tesco points if I bought myself one of their big packing cases that had contained Bacardi to carry me off in. It would have to be biodegradable though, the box not me. grin

It says on the top of the thread: '...... This is not a place to post (or to ask for) comments on other products......' but I was just mucking about and showing off blush

DebnCreme Sat 10-May-14 18:13:19

I think it only goes at the top of this particular thread anyway Ana so it isn't a rule generally. smile

Ana Sat 10-May-14 18:18:28

Oh, I'm with you now, DebnCreme! blush

BeeWitch Sat 10-May-14 18:22:24

Oh Grannyknot - your comment about your dental mishap just made me laugh so much I have snorted some gin and cranberry juice. grin

Grannyknot Sat 10-May-14 22:56:53

I'm glad it made you smile

I saw a fabulous ad (poster) portraying an older woman in a bathing suit in TK Maxx this morning. Wet hair slicked back, dripping wet, sand flecked face without a trace of make up, the picture shone with health and wellbeing.

I might try and find it online because there's an ad agency that knows what it's doing.

Is it this one GrannyK [[ www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2587897/Meet-62-year-old-swimsuit-model-TK-Maxx-plucks-real-shoppers-obscurity-star-new-campaign.htm]]l

Grannyknot Sun 11-May-14 15:44:02

Yes! Well done for finding it. smile I didn't notice the plunge neckline, can't say I'd like that, but that's the photo in the ad campaign. She just looks so real.

NanKate Sun 11-May-14 15:50:01

What a great figure she has Grannyknot .

I bet you she would have refused the bit of date slice I have just had with my cup of tea. In the past I would have eaten an enormous slab of cake, nowadays just a small slice will suffice. Pity it took me 60 odd years to be less greedy.

Grannyknot Sun 11-May-14 17:16:05

She does have a good figure - and now she's got a modelling career as well. Shows to go, never say never. grin

Ana Sun 11-May-14 17:28:33

Great teeth as well! envy

Aka Mon 12-May-14 07:03:35

Yes, and as GK says she looks real

Grannyknot Mon 12-May-14 07:13:22

In mitigation I would like to say I hadn't examined her teeth at the time the comment was made hmm.

NanKate Mon 12-May-14 07:57:03

My teeth aren't too bad but my figure could do with a bit of realignment. grin

I always think that one of the problems you get is that as people get older how they look varies more and more. Nobody confuses a new born and six month old baby or a 5 or 10 year old or 18 - 30 year old, there is a certain conformity of physical look, but by 40 some people are going grey, while others aren't. Some men are bald, others still have a luxuriant head of hair. Some women are getting saggy others aren't.

By the time your reach 50,60,70 it is almost impossible to use a person of an older age in an advert who will be either identifiable or aspirational to more than about 10% of your target audience. Currently we seem to appear in two forms, tall and slim with a luxuriant head of white hair, whitened teeth and tan leaping about (male and female) or crumpled old dear sitting all shrunken in an arm chair while improbably young daughter puts arm protectively around us. I find both repellent and do not remotely identify, look or act like either.

The other question I would like to ask is why do people only want to advertise disability aids, and funeral plans to us? Don't we buy food, cars, clothes, make-up, or any of the other ordinary everyday items bought by every other age group? Why do they only want to sell age specific items to us?

Aka Mon 12-May-14 23:08:51

* Flick* it's because those who are trying to sell us these products are too young to understand.

FlicketyB Tue 13-May-14 14:38:38

Give them time, they will learn.

Aka Tue 13-May-14 16:01:44

Indeed they will.

Elegran Tue 13-May-14 16:37:55

By the time they have learnt, they will not be doing that job any more, and another batch of advertisers will be thinking that over 50 = stairlifts + disability aids + funeral plans.

boheminan Wed 14-May-14 09:53:54

Oh, and another thing. Is it only young people that have their hair done?

Every hairdressing salon I've seen only displays advertising photos showing young models. For me it would make a refreshing change to see some of us over 50's being depicted in their advertising - we don't all still 'go' for tight perms and blue rinses (my hair's long, straight and pink at the moment). grin
