could anyone come up with a reliable way to pinpoint exactly how people are related? For instance what relation is my great niece to my great grand-daughter?. I worked it out as second cousin once removed but am I right?

No idea, but there are free genealogy tools available on the internet - try googling 'relationship calculator'.

There is a website with a chart to put your details in but I will have to go through some papers. If no-one has it at their fingertips I will check it out later this evening, sorry to not be too helpful.

You are right Mgtanne, second cousins once removed.
The rule is that first cousins share a set of grandparents. The child of one of those first cousins is a first cousin once removed (to the other cousin).
Second cousins share a set of great-grandparents, third cousins great-great grandparents and so on. K
