As some of you know DH died 4 years ago, I was speaking to a neighbour today who told me some people in the village had been talking about him recently. I said how pleased I was that he wasn't forgotten, my neighbour said "Are you kidding - he was a legend" I always knew he was kind, practical and generous but I found out he had done things even I didn't know about.
Some years ago someone in the village had mentioned he was unable to attend his daughter's wedding in another country because he didn't have the money, some offered to lend him the money but he said he was already in debt and didn't want to get into any more. The following day DH turned up at his house and handed him enough cash to pay for the airfare and his expenses while he was away - as a gift. No-one knew about this, not even me, until after DH died when the man told the everyone at DH's wake.
This brought out stories of other things DH had done, quietly and without telling anyone. Like the time he had delivered a load of logs to an elderly man so he could have a fire, the time a single mother moved into the village just before Christmas to find the previous owners had disabled the heating system and he worked all day to fix it so she could have heat and hot water for her children (I knew about that one because she and her boys spent the day at our house so they could be warm), the numerous times he paid for a taxi so people wouldn't drive home from the pub, fixing a roof for an unemployed man - so many things he did without anyone knowing.
Sorry, if this sounds like bragging but it made me even more proud of him than I already was
