Oh, Shalene, how awful for all involved, including the mum, who is clearly ill!

There's a silver lining here, IMO, and that is that her meltdown is leading to an emergency evaluation. For now, hopefully, the medication will prevent her from doing any further harm. But the boy should not be left alone w/ her, IMO, anyhow, and I'm glad you're trying to rehome the puppy (if only it were that easy w/ the child). If she ever happens to have another meltdown, then I think the GS should be removed from the room the minute it starts. But I realize you're not there, so not much you can do about this.

If the evaluation shows that, among other things, she's a danger to her child, I doubt they'll be allowed to just up and move. Social Services will become involved, surely. Perhaps your aunt will even be called upon to take care of GS for now. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I am trying now to get the pup rehomed now.
I will keep an eye on the situation and get more involved.

Maybe she has some condition such as bipolar. If she is in danger of harming her child or herself she could be sectioned and taken out of the situation and receive treatment. She needs urgent psychiatric assessment.

Assuming that the family don't move too far away, is there any possibility that you could have some contact with the mother so therefore keeping an eye on things and maybe help her.
I do appreciate that the meltdown was awful to witness but the woman is ill.
No one will feel worse than her when she 'comes back to herself' knowing what she did.

It would seem madness to put a puppy into this situation - they are difficult to deal with at the best of times. Perhaps you could suggest that the pup is rehomed? That would be one less thing to think about. Could you offer to look after it? Your aunt is the childs grandmother so she should, you would assume, be doing her best for her grandson. There is obviously a mental condition and help is being sought. The other important aspect is course that all this information is third hand, so difficult to know what else you can do.

The GP will probably do what is necessary. I don't know how the system works. The GP / psychiatrist will probably contact the SS. Keep in touch with your aunt to make sure all is ok. This is traumatic for everyone concerned especially the little boy.
