Didn’t expect to feel this way about her

I met her by chance in a café. She was much older than me (51), and I was just a 25 years-old student working part-time. Over time, we talked more, became friends, and eventually started a relationship.

She always told me she was poor and needed money. Even though I wasn’t in a good financial situation myself, I tried to support her and stand by her. But recently, I found out she wasn’t really poor at all. When I confronted her, she admitted that she only said that because she didn’t want me to be with her for her money.

What confuses me is that I never asked her for money, never cared about that part. I was the one making sacrifices just to keep the relationship going.
Now I don’t understand… why does it always turn against me when I try to give and make things work?
