Take elderberry capsules or Sambucol liquid at the first symptoms, can stop a cold in its tracks or at the least it lessens the symptoms, my whole family have sworn by this for years!

beckyinman Fri 09-Dec-16 22:34:09

I have a spoonful of honey in ht water with lemon, or have it on my yoghurt first thing, then plenty of vitamin c. Plus this time of the year the smell of oranges is very christmassy anyway

I load up on vitamin C and try to avoid anyone else who has a cold!

I have CFS and used to catch just about every cold going, so have done a huge amount of research on this over the years. To keep it brief, what works best for me is taking several grams of vitamin C the instant I feel a tickly throat (on top of my normal daily vitamin C supplement, which can also help with prevention, especially at this time of year) - just like it says at the top of the page. Seriously, it can work, as long as you take enough, soon enough. #2 on my list would be to avoid sugar. Virtually impossible at this time of year, I know! But when I'm fighting off a bug, and I have a sweet treat, the cold often breaks through, or tries to. Sugar depresses your immune system. One reason why I've always been skeptical about the honey-and-lemon drinks advised for colds.

As soon as I feel a bit queasy...run for the herbs. A hot thyme tea saves you from a chest infection. Best desinfectant.

Apart from getting the flu jab I think the key is to eat well, get plenty of sleep and supplement with vitamins if possible.

renaplumridge Fri 09-Dec-16 20:49:43

Avoid touching escalator rails, door handles, etc but it you have to carry a small Han cleansing gel in your pocket so you can apply to your hands adfterwards

flossy1973 Fri 09-Dec-16 20:31:37

Wash your hands often! Eat well and drink lots of water! Stay away from the grandchildren when they're I'll!!!

spottypjs Fri 09-Dec-16 20:21:59

Try to eat healthily and keep active too, I find when I stop doing things I get sick. So try to get out and about as much as you can.

Maclairey Fri 09-Dec-16 20:08:56

I dont really believe that there is too much you can do to prevent catching a cold, especially when you have children. I do try and promote good hygiene though and I wash my hands all the time. I dont believe in too much antibac stuff, you need to build up a resistance to some things.

I found that taking a daily vitamin D supplement works for me.

feefeegabor Fri 09-Dec-16 19:03:09

I've been taking Vitamin D this year and it really seems to have helped keep the colds at bay (so far ...!)

s861421 Fri 09-Dec-16 19:00:47

fresh sir, plenty of fluids, and plenty of fruit

peterhall Fri 09-Dec-16 18:41:39

Get the Flu jab as early as possible in the season, and quite simply, there is no way to avoid the occasional 'cold' so......as far as possible just stay away from others whilst you have a runny nose.

SusanCh Fri 09-Dec-16 18:38:46

Wash your hands regularly. That means every time you go near a sink. I once went shopping and got talking to a little girl in a shop who gave me a tatty teddy to hold. I should really have washed my hands as soon as possible, but left it until I got home. I was ill all weekend and could only think I'd caught something from the teddy - no offence to the child's mother, but it could have done with a good wash.

janeyf Fri 09-Dec-16 18:22:00

Regular use of hand sanitiser and keeping immune systems strong by consuming plenty of vitamin c such as by having a few satsumas each day
