This activity is now closed for questions

If you’ve travelled across the globe, just starting to see the world, or even if you’re just starting to plan your first ever travel experience, Collette wants to help educate you on the ins and outs of escorted touring (travelling in a group to various destinations via a guided tour). Tour designer and travel expert Diana Ditto will be here to answer all your travel related questions.

Here’s some information about Diana: “Diana, the Director of Product Design for Collette, often spends more than 100 days a year travelling. Her job is to seek new and incredible travel experiences to build into Collette’s escorted tours, offering unique travel moments you can’t find on your own. To do this, Diana speaks with industry experts, local travel guides, and tour guests, researching and handcrafting bespoke travel experiences for Collette guided tours with her team.”

Perhaps you have a Collette trip coming up and would like a bit more information on how it will all work? Maybe you’ve been thinking about going on an escorted tour for a while and want to know where to start? Or maybe you’d like to know where the best destinations are for touring?

Ask Diana your questions about touring on the thread below and we’ll select 10-15 questions for her to answer and post her responses as soon as possible. All who leave a question below (regardless of whether it’s chosen or not) will be entered into a prize draw where one Gransnetter will win a £150 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

Do any of the guided tours offer some time for people to do their own thing? I have relatives who live in different parts of the world so like to combine sightseeing with visiting people. Thanks.

So much to see in too short a time, this is the problem.

I like the idea of many tours but often hear feedback that there was not enough time at places or the travelling between was too much. I fear this would spoil the trip.

We would like to visit the Rockies and other places in Canada. We would also like to experience New England, but we had also wanted to schedule a visit to New York next year. Does Diana have any suggestions or advice should we want to amalgamate a visit to New York with Collette tours?

I would like to ask Diana what are some of the more obscure or unusual tours offered? I would also be interested to know about any places she has visited, checked out etc, but then decided not to offer guided tours for some reason or another - where were they and why would she decide against arranging tours there! (I think it is just as important to know about the pitfalls and places to avoid as it is the brilliant tours)

Looks good

I have been on quite a few small group tours over the past 17 years, starting in my early 40s. The age range was usually very varied and on one trip we had people in every decade from age 18 to 70s. This always worked well, with everyone mixing well. The trips have been all over South East Asia and India.
On my last few trips, the age range seems to have risen markedly (in line with my own age!) and I wonder if group tours are now mainly taken by the over 50s?

Do you have to pay single person supplements?

freefan Thu 06-Jun-19 20:07:32

If hubby and I travel together would it be easy to arrange if we wanted to do different excursions from each other ?

Are there opportunities to 'do your own thing' if the days itinerary is not want i'm looking for and if travelling alone, do you have to share rooms and if not, do I get the same quality of room as a travelling couple. Don't want to be put in the broom cupboard.

Are such holidays suitable for the disabled?

Minnibix Thu 06-Jun-19 21:14:39

I am concerned about the amount of activity there would be as both me an my partner are pensioners. Can you opt out of some things or even select a more gentler holiday

I am hard of hearing, are there options for people like myself, who may struggle to hear guides informing travellers on the facts of the area?

Are there tours by train instead of by coach?

blahblahblah1 Thu 06-Jun-19 22:25:23

I've done escorted tours before and enjoyed them. But now I have problems with mobility and fatigue so I don't see how I could join a group and keep up any more. How much flexibility would there be in missing some of the activities?

BeHappy Thu 06-Jun-19 23:08:06

How flexible can the schedules be?

LeeR1985 Thu 06-Jun-19 23:26:32

Are you able to stray a bit from the tour or is it quite strict? I'd love to have a helping hand guide me around new places but then if I wanted to bugger off for an hour and maybe stay in a place that I really enjoy or look at something different, i'd like the option

Is there a guided tour for singles

sarahex1 Fri 07-Jun-19 08:07:30

I worry about safety as a woman alone, are there tips you can give me?

cozitsme Fri 07-Jun-19 09:16:06

As a single traveller who would love to explore, is it possible to go on these escorted or guided holidays without incurring huge single traveller supplements. Also if I did wish to have a day of exploring on my own rather than with the group, is this also possible?

Blainalass Fri 07-Jun-19 09:22:52

What happens if the group doesn't gel and there is internal conflict?

Venus Fri 07-Jun-19 10:09:51

Are there tours where there are an equal number of ladies and gentlemen of, say, seventy plus age group?

MrRichTea Fri 07-Jun-19 11:49:22

Is there a list of plaaces to avoid?

hanarees Fri 07-Jun-19 19:08:31

Do tours typically involve time to spend how you like? Eg a few hours to explore alone without the rest of the group

Vonners Fri 07-Jun-19 20:42:56

Just had a look at your site as not hesrd of Collette Tours before.
Interesting itineraries and good reviews.
Would it be possible to enhance your search by date facility?
I filtered by the month I was available yet got tours that were not operating in the month I required - frustrating!

chris8888 Fri 07-Jun-19 21:17:53

I have looked at a few and always found them much more expensive than going independently. Are they really good value?

Cailin7 Fri 07-Jun-19 22:29:06

What is the normal group size, and what is good for a multi generation family group
