This activity is now closed for questions

If you’ve travelled across the globe, just starting to see the world, or even if you’re just starting to plan your first ever travel experience, Collette wants to help educate you on the ins and outs of escorted touring (travelling in a group to various destinations via a guided tour). Tour designer and travel expert Diana Ditto will be here to answer all your travel related questions.

Here’s some information about Diana: “Diana, the Director of Product Design for Collette, often spends more than 100 days a year travelling. Her job is to seek new and incredible travel experiences to build into Collette’s escorted tours, offering unique travel moments you can’t find on your own. To do this, Diana speaks with industry experts, local travel guides, and tour guests, researching and handcrafting bespoke travel experiences for Collette guided tours with her team.”

Perhaps you have a Collette trip coming up and would like a bit more information on how it will all work? Maybe you’ve been thinking about going on an escorted tour for a while and want to know where to start? Or maybe you’d like to know where the best destinations are for touring?

Ask Diana your questions about touring on the thread below and we’ll select 10-15 questions for her to answer and post her responses as soon as possible. All who leave a question below (regardless of whether it’s chosen or not) will be entered into a prize draw where one Gransnetter will win a £150 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

Are there any tours specifically for lone travellers that might not have anyone to holiday with?

angiehoggett Tue 11-Jun-19 12:23:25

Tours I've been on before seem to involve alot of getting on and off coaches and not actually walking very far or getting to explore on your own for very long. Would love something specialised to our needs.

Can you please tell me the companies that include all tour gratuities in the pricing?

How do you check the qualifications of the personnel on escorted tours. Often people who seek these tours can be vulnerable, due to age, mobility etc. so it would be helpful to know checks are done.

I would absolutely love to do something fabulous like this - though finding independent 'me-time' is tricky as I'm a sandwich carer.

I wonder if there are any opportunities for families? Possibly even something that is possible for someone in a wheelchair, with special needs. I'd love to think something might be possible as a family with one member a wheelchair user and impaired mentality.

Are the tours all inclusive or will there be additional fees along the way and is all food and drink included or is this extra?

I have a question about the security of groups when in escorted tours. Are there special/ extra security when in some destinations? Thank you.

For family reasons I am taking my 14 year old away this year on his own. I wondered about a tour as I enjoy travelling round and it might keep him interested. Do you have any suggestions (not too hot)?

What level of flexibility can be offered on tours?
I love the idea of some packages as the itineraries often sound fabulous, but I've seen some tour groups in Italy get absolutely marched through sites of interest and it's appalled me! I'd like to have an expert tour of places, but then also have time myself to wander around at my own pace.
Likewise, some itineraries seem full- which can be good, but then I'd want downtime to be factored in so as to choose optional excursions or just local exploring...

And are tours advised for solo travellers? There's quite an age difference between DP and myself, so I can't help but think about the future... I don't want to miss out on all the places I'd love to see but I'm sensible of the fact I may have to explore all my options

Do you run women only guided tour groups?

I stay in the Mistral Hotel, Maleme, Crete, just for single travellers. It's the best of both worlds, beautifully clean, 2 pools, lovely Cretan food, 2 swimming pools, overlooking the Med. If you want, you can laze by the pool all week. If you want to be adventurous, there are lots of buses to explore, but the hotel do their own trips to places some tourists never get to see, because it's run by a local family.

Does anyone do guided tours for people who do not walk so well/less bodied that cannot do things like big steps and do not want to be left somewhere for hours and expected to find something to do regardless of the weather.

janeholroyd89 Sat 15-Jun-19 13:04:39

I'd love a guided tour but I was wondering if there was the option of leaving and doing your own thing or how easy it would be to go on a different tour to your friend

Do you offer headphones for guests with poor hearing so they do not miss out on the talks and important information on the tour, my husband is very hard of hearing and this would be very beneficial to him.

I find it very difficult to go on holiday because everything is more expensive for one. Although prices given are usually for shared accommodation etc, companies don't put people together, you either get a reduction because you are a couple or you don't. Do you have suggestions for holidays where single people aren't penalised for a status often not of their choosing?

I love the tudors I wonder if there is a Tudor themed guided tour in London? I’d love that!

lillyofthevalley Sun 16-Jun-19 11:57:02

Do you get handouts on the coach for each destination so you can learn about the facts your tourguide might not tell you (or if you are at the back you cannot hear). Do you have an app for each tour for videos etc ?

WombleLancs Sun 16-Jun-19 13:35:36

I'd love to go away on my own, but have always been put off because I'm nervous about personal safety in other countries. Do you have any tips for single people joining the tours?

Purplecatlover1 Sun 16-Jun-19 15:02:38

Over what age range do people who do these tours tend to be? Do you try and put similar aged groups together?

JulieAAA Sun 16-Jun-19 17:29:26

Do you offer discounts for people who book several tours?

Winpeaks Sun 16-Jun-19 19:08:57

What are your tips for single travellers on group tours?

ItsGreatBeingAGran Sun 16-Jun-19 19:37:11

Is it possible to opt in to some of the excursions on a guided tour and opt out of others and can this be reflected in the overall cost of the trip?

angela121262 Sun 16-Jun-19 20:34:57

How flexible is the guided tour schedule

suewilly Sun 16-Jun-19 21:49:57

my big concern when I go on holiday is finding somewhere that can cope with our dietary needs. Both my husband and I are vegetarian, I'm also coeliac and he is lactose in tolerant. We are nervous of taking on an escorted tour because we assume we would be visiting a restaurant that the guide uses on a regular basis. Would this be true? If so, if we booked a guided tour, how would we make sure that the guide took our dietary needs into account?

baconbap Sun 16-Jun-19 22:01:30

do you have any advice if you end on an escorted tour stuck with an exceptionally annoying participant?
