This activity has now closed

For a lot of people, retirement is an opportunity to embark on new adventures, and to grow as a person. It’s an opportunity to pursue activities and hobbies that you’ve always wanted but never had time to, and to focus on the areas of life that fulfil and excite you.
We know that retirement can be full of colour and exploration, which is why Legal & General would love to hear your plans for when you retire, or your experiences if you’ve already retired.

Here’s what Legal and General have to say;
We’re delighted that Gransnet is supporting our national campaign to change the way retirement is depicted in advertising. Our customers have told us they don’t feel the images they see in ads or campaigns really represent their lives. Retirement has changed, no longer the dolling out of carriage clocks and twilight walks on the beach - it’s a far more vibrant and varied journey and we want Gransnet members to help us show just how colourful retirement can be!

Do you have exciting plans for retirement? Maybe you’re going to travel around the world - or maybe you’ve already have? Has your retirement inspired you to pursue something new? If so, what was it, and how did it enrich your life?

Whichever ways you plan to make your retirement colourful, post on the thread below and all who do so will be entered into a prize draw where 1 GNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).
If you’ve got a picture to accompany your post, please share that too!

Legal & General would also love you to take part in their on-site photo competition, where you can share pictures of what a colourful retirement looks like for you, and be in with a chance of winning £200!

Thanks and good luck!

Join a gym for the winter so I keep fit. Have days out to the seaside now I live in Dorset

We were lucky enough to be able to retire early, so that we can travel while we are still fit and able. This year we have been to Australia and New Zealand and are visiting family in the USA in September.
Not having to set the alarm every day and being able to accept invitations without having to check shift patterns is bliss.
As others have said, our grandsons are the colour in our lives as family is our main priority.

My retirement at the ripe old age of 53 (7 years ago) has meant a huge amount of travel all over the world, from the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides to Stewart Island at the southern tip of NZ, and many, many places in between. I
have been able to greatly increase the amount of hillwalking I do. Last year I made it to the top on Ben Nevis and Snowdon a couple of weeks apart. I’ve walked bits of the Appalachian Trail in the US and the Milford Track in NZ. I took up yoga, something I had always wanted to do.
Oh, and that traditional retirement thing...I took up knitting again.

He's been retired 9 years and I've clocked up 6 years. We do gardening and he does loads of maintenance. He's trying to future proof the house anticipating frailty. We watched the couple next door who were 10 years or so older than us deteriorate. It was an 'awful warning'. Lots of summer short breaks (he doesn't like to leave his lawn for too long). Still manage 2-3 weeks skiing. He bemoans his lack of ability compared with when we started over 30 years ago but I was never any good so can't tell the difference. Hoping our health maintains and the money lasts as long as we do. I'll have to downsize if he goes first. No idea what he would do.

Retirement for me will be hoping I have enough money to get by and hoping that my body keeps up the pace to enjoy all the outdoor activities I enjoy now that are free and wonderful!

Do you have exciting plans for retirement?

Travel travel and more travel, we intend to downsize, and enjoy our twilight wears, the UK is the first on our list - we have gone abroad for the last 20 plus years and really ignored our beautiful country and what it has to offer.

Maybe you’re going to travel around the world - or maybe you’ve already have?

I intend to visit countries like Australia, New Zealand and the states of America - New England for sure. I'd love to put a pin in a map and say "there next"

Has your retirement inspired you to pursue something new? If so, what was it, and how did it enrich your life?

Retirement has inspired me to look at my life, what is important in life, not have to hit the next deadline - catch the early bus. I have begin gardening seriously and painting, and have a dark room for black and white photos of landscapes and moon scenes which I intend to publish and maybe exhibit.

Hubby and I hope to do quite a bit of travelling, but also stay the majority of the time at home with our Grand-Children.
I think a colourful retirement is keeping yourself busy and this is exactly what we're planning to do, looking forward to the freedom of seeing where it takes us.

travelling the world

Definitely living abroad in the sun somewhere. Might be cliche for some, but we worked hard all our lives and we have firm plans to enjoy it in our little bolt hole in the sun

We never intended to retire as early as we did, I was 58, OH was 55.
We had been full on for the past 4 yrs renovating a dilapidated property. I came home from work and OH had booked a holiday in Bulgaria.
While there we bought * another* ? dilapidated property but the view was to die for (on the coast) we didn't even look inside.
Within 3 months we had sold our uk property and put our goods onto a removal lorry and drove to Bulgaria.
After we had completed this property we were a bit bored again so we bought a moto home and a Smart car to tow behind.
We sold the Bulgaria property and proceeded to visit every country in Europe.
After that adventure was exhausted we made sure that we spent the winter in Spain in the motohome where sometimes we would leave the MH on a site and fly home.
We were lucky in that we always kept a flat in the uk.
We took several long haul holidays in this time.
But now, I'm more than happy with my bungalow and my garden ?
We still have the MH and still take it to Spain but not for so long and to Bulgaria where we have many friends.

I just want to be able to afford to relax and spend quality time with family, who are scattered around the country now. I don't want anything exciting, I just want to be financially comfortable.

Retirement means being able to please myself, to have a lazy day enjoying reading a novel, or planning a holiday. It is the opportunity to take advantage of a late holiday booking at a bargain price. Spending quality time with the grandchildren, and having them for sleepovers too. To enjoy zipping through the countryside in my classic car, and seeing the beautiful differences of the seasons changes. Certainly, no time for boredom!

Pumpkin2 Thu 18-Jul-19 20:29:33

My plans to do anything exciting in retirement have been abandoned due to disability, but I hope to still be able to spend time with my granddaughter.

mrsaishakhan Thu 18-Jul-19 19:34:20

We have an extended family so it would be school run for the children, more time to look after the next generation. Family is important just like my garden which needs more attention. Of course, going on trip or two with more time around the globe will be affordable for me. I shall be in a position to expand my property portfolio so I shall be quite occupied in these matters.

Dormouse1940 Thu 18-Jul-19 19:34:15

Not retired- I suppose my hopes for retirement start with the hope I'll still be fit and healthy enough to enjoy it!

I like to imagine I'll stay active and be able to travel a lot, as well as get back into education and maybe even study for higher qualifications because why not?
Age shouldn't be a barrier, but good health may well be and unfortunately that's not something we can guarantee...

gd Thu 18-Jul-19 19:31:08

I can't see myself being able to afford to retire.

svalentine60 Thu 18-Jul-19 18:53:11

I'm 59 now and have been planning for quite a few years to take my rv around Europe. I already travel quite a bit with it within the UK and have done a couple of trips to France and Spain but would love to spend more time in the RV travelling than at home after I retire. Really looking forward to it smile

elfies Thu 18-Jul-19 18:30:03

We're not all doddery pensioners ,some of us have agile brains and a sense of adventure ,attend exercise classes and gyms and despite lack of cash since retiring we've been to Jamaica three times , Canada twice , Tenerife three times and Gambia and the Alpujarras . four of these have been competition wins .

peronel Thu 18-Jul-19 18:29:42

I plan to travel the world as I missed out on a gap year or backpacking round Europe. But, being retired, I'll do it in luxury...

towser44 Thu 18-Jul-19 18:15:41

Enough money and mobility to be able to go hill walking whenever the weather is decent enough! Would love to do all the Wainwright's in the Lake District!

Aka77 Thu 18-Jul-19 17:11:24

Id like to travel to all the places I didn’t have time to see when work got in the way of my life.
