Cruise holidays can be an ideal option for those who love a care-free holiday, visiting new cities or having different scenery every day without the hassle of unpacking more than once. Whether you’ve been on a cruise or not, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) would like to hear your thoughts. If you’re an experienced cruise-goer they’d love to hear your top tips, and what you wish you'd known before your first cruise. And, if you’ve never been on a cruise, they would also like to find out what you would find helpful before going on a holiday at sea.

Here’s what NCL has to say: “New to cruising? Not sure what to expect? Look no further – this handy guide tells you everything you need to know about holidays at sea. From accommodation choices to entertainment, what to pack and what to do on board, we’ve demystified cruising and you’ll discover why it really is the perfect holiday choice for everyone.”

So what are your tips and tricks when selecting a cruise holiday and how do you make sure it is an enjoyable experience? What are your expectations of a cruise holiday and what are the must-haves on board you can’t go without? How do you prepare and what do you pack for a cruise? How can cruise companies make it your perfect holiday at sea?

If you haven’t travelled on a cruise, what would tempt you to do so? What have you heard about cruises that you would like to understand more about? Now is the time to indulge in your curiosity of cruise holidays.

Please share your views on cruise holidays and you will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My parents took to cruising later in life and enjoyed visiting lots of different places that they wouldn’t have done otherwise.

The shows and entertainment are top class . My husband also spent hours in the library on both of the cruises we did with NCL .our daughter and nephew loved the kids club too .
We did our own excursions even in Russia. So easy to pick up a taxi or bus to get from the ship and we hated being with other passengers when going around a town or monument .

Our one and only cruise (so far) was with MSC. I loved the exerience of the cruise, but I was so disappointed with the menu choices. Before we booked we made it clear that both hubby and I are vegetarian and that I need to eat gluten free while hubby needs to eat lactose free. At the time of booking we were assured there would be plenty of choice. There wasn't! I existed for a week on fruit for breakfast and lunch and salad for dinner. The staff tried to explain that as we were on an enclosed ship they could only provide the food they had on board. While I understand this, my complaint was that there was no attempt to help our plight. I asked if it would be possible to order jacket potato one day for the following evening, but was advised that the menu was already set. The lack of choice really spoiled the holiday for me.

Honestly does not appeal to me in the slightest.

If you suffer with motion sickness choose a room as much in the middle of the ship as possible you will get less swell there also if you are new to cruising it is best to choose a Med cruise as this is one of the calmest seas. Cruising is brilliant but you dont get much time in any port, but it does give you some great ideas of where you would like to visit and spend more time

Just booked our first cruise around the Canaries and Portugal. So excited!! It's a great choice for us as my husband can no longer fly and this allows us to still explore further afield! smile

A cruise is on my bucket list, i would particularly love the sound of the Scandinavian one however the last ferry crossing was choppy and I was very sea sick! Everyone who i have talked to that has been on one has loved them.

I've been on 2 cruises and both were lovely. If you enjoy looking around places, like we do, make sure you research how long the ship stays at each location.
Our rooms both times were cosy but very well equipped and very clean. The food was wonderful and the staff always very helpful.
The main thing is to do your research well before you decide.

I've never been, but my Mum and I would talk about going on one together (just a bit impossible with all the different medications we were on between us!)

I would love to try a cruise. The idea of exploring new places whilst travelling in such luxury is right up my street. Unfortunately, my better half isn't so sure.

I have never been on a cruise as an adult. I've never been much interested although I remember thinking when I visited Norway that going on a cruise of the fjords would be spectacular. I would worry about being cooped up with people for a long period - think my husband particularly would go stir crazy.

I have been on a few cruises and loved every one. The best thing is waking up in a different place each day. And the food - just amazing! But I don't think anything can beat a good all inclusive holiday in a nice hotel on dry land. There is always something sad about sailing away from the land into nothing but endless sea. The Atlantic crossing we did was really boring. On the whole cruises are expensive - especially the excursions and drinks. and as for the gratuities - that is just wrong.

I've never really seriously considered booking a cruise, as the sort of holidays I normally choose are self-catering and not part of a package. I've been put off cruising because of the idea of being surrounded constantly by other people, and by having to 'dress for dinner' - I think maybe I'm a bit out of date regarding that though. So what would tempt me? Well the idea of seeing lots of places in one holiday is interesting, and also I guess I'd be more inclined to go on a cruise if that was the best way to see a certain part of the world (eg, Alaska maybe?). Never say never!

Waking up in a different place in a fantastic hotel, with terrific facilities, what's not to love.

Went on our first ocean cruise this year and we’re hooked. Loved the scenery(Norwegian fjords) and the peace of the sea days. Food was lovely and dressing up was not overly formal unless you wanted to.
A decent drinks package is essential for us together with a smaller ship, the one we were on had about 700 passengers.

I'd love to go on a cruise but my husband isn't keen as he thinks he would be bored! I'd like it if brochures went into detail about what there is to do on board and excursions etc and maybe gave an idea of how you could spend your time. I'm happy with a good book and wouldn't need extra entertainment 24/7 but he struggles to "do nothing" as he sees it.

Love cruises. Really enjoy Sail Away time as the ship leaves for its next destination. So exciting. Then the next morning it's great looking out to see the new view.

Have not been on one. I’m worried about any noise of the engine making me feel sea sick.
My sister has now been on lots of cruises and loves it. She has yet to persuade me.

You just can’t beat cruising for good value, choice of things to do, excellent food, different ports to see and of course, the opportunity to chill out and relax. We have tried many holidays but always come back to cruising.

gran1 Mon 02-Sept-19 12:43:54

Have only been on a cruise once and sadly my husband was ill and we missed going on planned outings in ports of call.
Happily the ships doctor was able to sort him out with a prescription that was dispensed on board.

Although we have been married for over forty years my wife and myself have never been on a cruise but something we have not only thought about but discussed many times over the years about doing now I am badly bothered with arthritis and my mobility is not great I now feel it might have passed us by as it could be to physically demanding for me now?

BBbevan Mon 02-Sept-19 06:38:44

There are so many replies on here which say' I would love to go on a cruise but---- the crowds, the queues, the formal dining, the wrong clothes, the sickness, put me off'
None of that may ever happen. Please go and see for yourself. Life is too short for ' What if?'.

tubbyj Mon 02-Sept-19 00:31:52

Love the idea of somewhere new each day.

live7 Sun 01-Sept-19 23:57:27

I haven't been on a cruise before. I'd love to but not sure whether I would get seasick or not. That puts me off. Also I wouldn't want one where dressing up all the time is expected - I don't enjoy that.
But I would love the relaxing part and being able to visit some places I've always wanted to go to without packing and unpacking all the time.
