With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My go to snack when feeling peckish is Brazil nuts, they are full of goodness and 2 or 3 are more than enough to take that hunger pang away. Delicious too.

I try not to snack between meals, but I do look forward to a small portion of something sweet with my afternoon tea, and am partial to a small slice of buttered Soreen. However, if I do feel hungry, I drink a large glass of water which usually does the trick.

I always just have a few mixed nuts if I am hungry but try not to eat in between meals.

Soreen is a special treat for after tea with lovely homemade lemon curd on it. Beautiful.

I like Soreen with plenty of butter and a nice cup of tea and now they do mini ones so I can fit in a lunch box if going out on a picnic. But not going out since March. I keep some in my bread bin Good to keep a space keeps longer than bread.

I make up a jar of mixed healthy treats, and snack on a handful, transferred to a tiny bowl. Sunflower, pumpkin, sesame seeds, dried strawberries and raspberries, chopped nuts , sultanas, chopped apricots , figs and prunes, plus any other bits I happen to have. I alternate with a mix of chopped salad, radishes, fennel, celery, cucumber, courgette, spring onions and beetroot. The small pieces take longer to eat, and you get a good variety of texture and flavour.

I often enjoy a thin slice of malt loaf as my lunch with tomato, cucumber, sliced pepper & olives as I don't like sweet foods at all. Trouble is I also enjoy the chunk of cheese which I just HAVE to add to the plate.

I cut up vegetables and fruit and leave them in the fridge to grab a quick snack. As well I keep almonds handy too

I love mashed banana as a snack, with just a little bit of milk.

Keep the fat content down. So avoid biscuits and crisps and substitute fruit or Soreen malt loaf. I used to eat it with a huge slab of butter but the individual loaves have cured me of that, so thanks Soreen!

We all love to snack so I encourage my kids to incorporate in their 5-a-day by decorating a slice of Soreen with sliced or chopped fruit e.g. bananas, blueberries, strawberries, kiwi etc. This encourages them to explore new tastes, new smells and textures while making pictures or patterns on the bread. This way snacking takes longer, is more satisfying and always finger licking good.

I am an 'Anosmic', both smell and taste affected, my food choices are important to me, texture being most dominant.
I have always enjoyed Soreen, just as it comes.... no butter, no extras, the sensation of the 'sticky' malt loaf , not only hits the spot but triggers memories of enjoying it in my childhood, but never knew then, why i enjoyed it so much.

Love soreen been buying it for years for my husband when he was working for his lunchbox, now I have started to have it with so many toppings, and it’s great it you want to watch you weight-always buy two a week.

Girvan Sun 28-Jun-20 11:07:03

I decided it’s too hard to give up things but I allow myself what I want but cut things smaller or bite size therefore I’m having something I desire but not having the huge portion that I would otherwise eat.

We fell into the pattern of just eating what we fancied to get us through the first few weeks. Our healthy eating habits went out of the window resulting in a weight gain of several kilos. Enough is enough and we have now gone back to roughly planning our meals ahead, not buying biscuits, bread, cake, chocolate, ice cream and all the things that we had added since the lockdown. We stock up on fruit and veg (and supplement it with home grown produce). We have bought a machine that turns frozen fruit into sorbet/ice cream and are thoroughly enjoying eating healthily again and the weight is gradually coming off. Life seems much better as a result.

Morning snack , packet of poriage oats with cut up dates in for natural sweetness. Keeps me full. Gorgeous.

In the Winter I keep home made vegetable soup available in the fridge of freezer. It fills me up and stops me snacking.

In the summer home made humous and vegetable sticks In the fridge prepped and ready to go mean I reach for that rather than crisps or something less healthy.

I love apple slices with peanut butter as a snack or if I'm feeling indulgent a good quality dark chocoalte with almonds

Sappho Fri 26-Jun-20 14:32:16

I am partial to gorgeous fruit breads like Soreen. The trick is to make it a delightful part of your afternoon tea by serving it in thin modest slices with a little fresh butter and some sliced apples alongside. A pot of tea and you will think you are the Queen! Grandchildren love this treat too!

I have my warm with butter just turn the toaster on and put 2 slices on top and then when warm add butter, I find that if you try and chew it 25times before swallowing you feel more satisfied it's some kind of proven point I watched on TV, it takes abit of practice as we are used to chewing alittle then swallowing. I sometimes add a slice of apple and cheese to a cold slice which is delicious, like you would sometimes eat with Christmas cake

I have to confess to loving a snack. When I’m at work I always get a 4pm dip in energy so I head to Tesco and pick up a pack of 2 buttered slices of Soreen from the fridge. It’s perfect for filling that gap until dinner time smile

monk08 Wed 24-Jun-20 23:49:14

Dont snack if going to eat sweet things its always after evening meal. Although do enjoy malt loaf but would have it for breakfast with a banana

claresav Wed 24-Jun-20 23:16:07

When I’m desperate for a sweet treat, I reach for one of Nature’s’ Toffees’ - a Medjool date. They contain fibre, and really boost flagging energy levels. If I am really hungry, I reach for some natural, sugar free nut butter, and fill the date with a spoonful of the nut butter. This Fills that hunger gap, or that post lunch energy slump.

Mumto4 Wed 24-Jun-20 13:05:42

I have Soreen with drizzle off cream and fresh fruit delicious not to much cream.

Crystal2870 Wed 24-Jun-20 12:39:22

Have plenty of crudites on hand and fresh fruit and dates, something like an apple and a date satisfys a sweet tooth.

thecatwhisper Wed 24-Jun-20 11:04:57

My tip is to eat one big meal around 4pm and that should stop any snacking until breakfast the next day.
