With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I like Apple slices with cottage cheese or Hummus.
I find snacking hard. Once I start a packet of biscuits that’s it. They all go.
I feel better if I have fruit with a snack. At least getting some of your 5 a day.

2 slices of malt loaf with a sliver (not a chunk) of Cheshire cheese for a light lunch with an apple. Yummy!

I try to snack on fruit and nuts but occasionally have chocolate or biscuits when I’m craving something sweet. I find every day is different. Some days I don’t need snacks and other days I do so I just do what my body tells me to!

A very small dish of full fat greek yogurt with a tiny drizzle of honey mixed in, used as a dip for a sliced apple. Keeps me happy and away from the biscuit tin!

Having a fruit or peppermint tea rather than breakfast tea makes the biscuit temptation less strong. Somehow they don't go together so well. However, malt loaf with a cuppa sounds delicious...

Eating more fresh fruit. Sometimes snack on low fat sweet popcorn.

Sunflower seeds. Hard to get into but worth the effort...

We have now started to buy the Soreen malt loaf thats already been sliced as saw that on the supermarket shelves a few months ago, as with the normal one you can sometimes cut a larger chunk out as my husband loves this product, and i like the banana one more myself, and as we are both diabetic we occasinally buy some nuts not as many crisps now, and grapes and easy peelers, and bananas, and we use butter on the Soreen which we only buy butter these days for crumpets and the Soreen loaf.

i try and keep buy try not have much snacking stuff in the house to get tempted, get a small amount so i can limit how much we eat. but everyone deserves a treat sometimes

pooohbear2811 Fri 12-Jun-20 08:47:29

My answer - don't buy it and you cant eat it. I try and stick to nuts or crackers of some sort with jam.
As an oral allergy sufferer then snacking/eating healthy is very difficult any way.
Do love a malt loaf and do eat it as I find it a healthy alternative. Love the fruity five one the best. I also have the advantage of being intolerant to dairy so eat mine as it comes, nothing added but Soreen is still moist enough to be pleasant dry.

If I snack between meals I have fruit or occasionally a carrot. I have tried to eat more healthily during lockdown as I know how easy it would be to overindulge.
Must add that our family loves Soreen, with butter as you say, but it is so moreish that an open loaf will disappear at one siting.

Explore the world of fruit. I was the only one in the family who snacked on this, but gradually I’ve won them over as they themselves experimented on the various berries etc. I left in the fridge. Now it’s easy to hit our 5 a day, without it being a challenge to get them there! smile

Love, Soreen Malt loaf. Gorgeous toasted with butter or just on its own. Snacking? I love raw veg, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, courgettes, peppers etc, Especially if you eat them with a lump of cheddar, oops smile

I like to enjoy frozen yoghurt bark packed with fruit - it's so easy to make and by using a fat free yoghurt and fresh fruit it's a guaranteed winner for all the family from the very young to the more elder of us!

Candelle Fri 12-Jun-20 00:41:02

I try (very very hard!) not to snack between meals but some long evenings call out for a nibble or three...

Our go-to snacks are fresh fruit, rice cakes in chocolate or one plain chocolate covered peppermint cream. These seem to quell the rumblings.... for a while!

Zigzag123 Thu 11-Jun-20 21:17:22

Cut your malt loaf into smaller pieces so it lasts longer but you eat the same amount and feel full afterwards

rosenoir Thu 11-Jun-20 20:37:44

Soreen with low fat cream cheese and thinly sliced pears.

simontink Thu 11-Jun-20 19:43:06

I love soreen and eat it without butter (never liked the taste of butter). I tend to choose 3 snacks for the day in the morning and eat them at intervals through out the day. Find if I do a menu in the morning I am pretty good at sticking to it

smiffy1062 Thu 11-Jun-20 18:02:57

I like to snack on nuts, I make up a little pot of mixed nuts in the morning to see me through the day

quizqueen Thu 11-Jun-20 17:21:13

I hope Soreen aren't putting their company's products in the healthy category!!!! Fruit and raw vegetables and water are the only real healthy snacks.

Holidayenthusiast Thu 11-Jun-20 16:41:56

A piece of fruit or a handful of nuts is my snack of choice.

grannydarkhair Thu 11-Jun-20 16:34:14

I've been eating a lot more fruit during lockdown than I did before. I also like oatcakes with tomatoes and cucumber.

Kingfisher333 Thu 11-Jun-20 16:09:24

It's important to always try to eat well at meal times then you are less likely to crave snacks.
If you do want a snack, try to choose healthy options like fruit and nuts before reaching for the biscuits or chocolates.

I must admit I am a TV snacker I do try to stick with healthy snack , I do find Jelly with fresh strawberries and Oranges is the best snack for me because I seem not to have anymore after I have had it.

starwell Thu 11-Jun-20 14:31:31

I try to stick to 3 meals a day. good breakfast then crispbread with cottage cheese & tomatoes with coffee for lunch then that's it until dinner time. after the main course - lots of vegetables and a little meat/fish, etc, usually settle in to watch tv with a treat - slice of soreen with best butter is a favourite.
