With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

By coincidence, having not tasted Soreen for years, I twice received a packet of the lunch box sized malt loaves in my weekly delivery of food for the 'elderly and vulnerable' This has reminded me of how tasty it is. I am hooked again grin

For the past two months I have been picking fruit from the garden daily. The best fruit goes straight into my mouth as I pick, while the not quite as perfect fruits are made into jam. I have also during lockdown developed my own quick and easy snack utilising the bananas (also from my food parcel( and small wraps. Spread wrap with soft butter or Raspberry jam (or both), wrap banana and squash. D licious

We always grow cherry tomatoes, so my go to snack in the summer is a freshly picked tomato, in winter it’s sliced melon or a handful of nuts and raisins.

Snacking on melon and celery is safe but what works for me is having breakfast that little bit later stops the snacking mid morning

I like greek yoghurt (the real one) , blueberries, raspberries with a small amount of muesli :-)

Soreen handy snack packs and real butter: nothing beats it unless you add fresh strawberries or raspberries on top of each slice.

my go to snack is a banana - so already portion controlled. If I have nuts, I only have what can fit in the palm of my hand and then the packet is puts away, otherwise it's too easy to eat too many.

Make your own MINI CHEESECAKE with a Soreen base (this malt loaf is great as a base, instead of biscuits). In a small container or jar add your soreen loaf, top frozen yogurt of your choice and a few slices of fruit. Put it in the freezer for around 20-30 minutes- just so that it gets cold. Take it out for a few minutes before you tuck in! Voila

Celery with guacamole or apple & celery with different cheeses & perhaps a couple of crackers to fill me up!

TracyC Tue 07-Jul-20 11:55:46

My family live on Soreen and fruit, the pre sliced stops the squashing!

I'll prep a lot of salad so they're ready for me to eat when I'm peckish.
When I need something more filling to keep me going some toast, Soreen or a cracker with a bit of butter is perfect.

My go to is normally oat cakes with light cream cheese and thinly sliced strawberries but did not realise how healthy this malt loaf really is so have now added to my shopping list, just need to remember to limit myself to one slice?

I try not to goshopping when I'm hungers so less impulse buying, then if I don't have unhealthy snacks in the house less likely to eat them.

CatsAreAwesome Sun 05-Jul-20 19:32:10

I keep lots of fruit in the house to have a healthy snack.

When the 'I need a snack now' button is activated, I drink a glass of water instead of snacking as I'm actually thirsty, rather than hungry.

loriross Sun 05-Jul-20 12:04:57

If I think I might be hungry between meals, I have a cup of tea first and that usually tides me over so I don't end up reaching for unhealthy snacks.

Mamadoc Sun 05-Jul-20 11:41:12

I make carrot fingers, swoosh them in olive oil and piquant paprika, and put in a hot oven for five minutes. Lovely !

MamaCaz Sun 05-Jul-20 07:25:42

If I'm longing for a snack, but know that I'm not really hungry, I start by drinking a glass of water then make myself wait ten minutes. Quite often, the craving has passed by then.

If it hasn't, I might have a very small bowl of muesli, as the mixture of oats, fruit and nuts seems to satisfy the craving, meaning I don't go back for more like I do with things like biscuits, crisps or nuts.

Maybe I should try Soreen next time, as it sounds like it might work just as well,

When sharing a snack with the kids, chop some grapes or apples. Peanut butter is great to dip them in. Some cubed cheese and some Soreen loaf buttered. Easy and you get fruit, fibre and dairy.

allythackray Wed 01-Jul-20 11:53:07

Chop up some of your favourite crudites and have them ready to go in the fridge, when you feel the need to open that magic door LOL

I have stopped spreading margarine or butter on bread, toast, buns and my Soreen fruit loaf, so I can snack a bit more with no extra calorie damage.

Rowantree Tue 30-Jun-20 07:55:35

I've given up snacking because it was interfering with my weight loss and metabolism. I've lost more weight since. That said, if I feel super-hungry I go for complex carb and/or high protein - so maybe a few nuts or very small cheese and crunchy veg like sliced pepper, carrot sticks or celery. Means you chew lots which helps the feeling of fullness. I avoid sugar because it's addictive, with empty calories.

I very rarely snack but if it is hot I would have an ice cream.
Soreen is sometimes eaten after lunch as a dessert

MountainAsh Mon 29-Jun-20 22:36:55

I have two buttered slices of Soreen for breakfast, when I top them with banana slices, I don’t need a snack. In fact it keeps me going till mid afternoon.
My tip is to plan in advance for snacks. DH needed to cut back, so I prepared healthy snack boxes. Combinations of cheese, cherry tomatoes, grapes, celery, nuts, Bread sticks, sun dried tomatoes, cucumber and carrot sticks, scallions, pineapple cubes. Once or twice a week a box will have a chocolate Or cake treat. Because I am controlling the snacks I have to be good too..
I must confess that this is a good intention that I haven’t yet implemented. cupcake blush grin

Watermelon for me - especially in warm weather.

Although having read this thread and seen people discussing malt loaf with cheese I’ve just added Soreen to the online shop for the first time in about 15 years!

maurwin Mon 29-Jun-20 15:14:38

I just love the taste, the thicker the slice the better for me !
