The last few months have put us all to test - from learning how to create a tasty meal with only what we have in the fridge, to finding new ways to stay connected with our loved ones while apart. But these challenging times made us appreciate more the little things in life such as a stranger’s kindness or your neighbour’s cake.
With that in mind, McCarthy & Stone would like to find out more about what lockdown has made you feel grateful for and who would you like to say a ‘Thank you’ to.

Here’s what they have to say: “A McCarthy & Stone apartment gives you much more than a lovely home. It gives you access to a vibrant, caring and supportive community of friends and neighbours. And as recent events have shown, nothing is more important.

We couldn’t be prouder of the way our homeowners have stepped up to support each other during this challenging period. The already strong community spirit has flourished. Despite the restrictions, we’ve seen our homeowners adapt to new ways of socialising, with everything from exercise classes to gin nights — as well as innovative ways to celebrate things like anniversaries, birthdays and VE day.

Meanwhile 400 of our staff volunteered to help with shopping and other essentials in our Buddy scheme. And nationally, we’ve entertained homeowners with free virtual talks; a school penpal programme; exercise ideas from the Gym Group, a poetry competition and more. As a result we’ve been inundated with moving messages of thanks.”

So we are asking you, what are the little things that made lockdown more bearable for you and your family? What are you most looking forward to after lockdown is lifted? What are the new things you’ve learnt about yourself and others? How have you kept positive and what role does your circle of family and friends play in it? If you need to call out one thing or person that you are especially thankful for during lockdown, what or who would that be?

Whatever you feel grateful for or just want to say a ‘Thank you’ to something or someone who’s made lockdown more bearable for you, share your stories on the thread below. All GN users who post sharing their experience will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I am grateful for the new friends we have found in neighbours we merely passed pleasantries with before. We all exchanged numbers as soon as lockdown commenced. We have done bits of shopping for each other when we were struggling to get items after the panic buying. I 'lent' flour to the lady opposite when she ran out after she'd started baking. She repaid me with eggs from her chickens! We have all seen each other more and chatted more - all from a social distance, of course!!

Being pregnant, giving birth and having a newborn during lockdown have been the most important things for me. I didn't have enough time to think about everything happening out there .

I would love to say Thank You to my cousin. She has been keeping our family in contact with each other weekly, either for a chat or quiz. It’s lovely x

To my husband I am grateful to you for supporting me throughout lockdown, giving me space to work from home, drying my tears when I was missing our grandchildren and just keeping me sane! Thank you for being you! X

Lockdown has made me feel grateful for a lot of things that I took for granted.

Being able to see family and friends whenever you wanted is top of that list, followed by socialising and going out for food and drink.

I never got bored during lock down, but I was constantly aware of how strange everything had become.

I am very grateful to my husband who had to carry on essential work throghout lockdown, he also shopped to keep my daughter and I safe.

I am grateful for all the video chats I had with my son and grandson, who I missed terribly throughout lockdown.

I am so grateful that I have a garden as I enjoyed many happy hours sowing seeds then planting out vegetables and flowers to enjoy over the summer. I also love to sit and read my Kindle in the garden and cant believe how lucky we were that the weather was so good and we were not forced inside. It made me appreciate my garden all the more knowing that so many other people were shut in a flat and couldn't access the fresh air.

I am also very grateful to the lovely caring and considerate Nurses and Doctors who looked after my father when he became suddenly ill and diagnosed with terminal cancer, they allowed us to visit whenever we wanted and gave him the best care in the last few weeks of his life.

Most of all I am grateful to have such a close and caring extended family who came together and helped each other through the toughest time.

I am grateful for being able to get outside in the sunshine, which instantly makes me feel more upbeat and able to deal with everything at this difficult time. We have our garden and look out onto a local park, but are also lucky enough to have the countryside only a five minute's drive away.

I am grateful for my husband and family. For the NHS (we have two nurses and a paramedic in the family) and for all the other key workers who have kept on working throughout.

I am grateful for my garden to help keep my mind occupied along with my grandchildren, I am also grateful for WhatsApp so I am able to keep in touch with my children whether they live just round the corner from me or like my son who lives in Jersey or my daughter who lives in Madrid it's been a god send. As well as family, health and general kindness, I'm so glad that I seem to be blessed with a sense of humour. It certainly helps me. I'm also 'weirdly' grateful that I have had the same three fivers in my wallet since 13th March AND my cc statement for this month has a credit balance. Wow!

Shandy3 Thu 16-Jul-20 13:01:15

My family. Thankfully they are wonderful people. I've had many video calls with good wishes and flowers to arrange. I'm never without some contact from one of them and they are only a phone call away if I want to 'talk'.
Additionally my garden, this I've enjoyed revitalising and it has rewarded me with its abundance of colour and now home grown produce! How wonderful to hear the wildlife and watch the new seasons' additions feeding from my newly turned soil. I feel very lucky ???

I am a front line worker and was nursing patients with Covid-19. I caught the virus and was very unwell as I had to isolate for over a month. I had a tough time as my symptoms reappeared after 2 weeks and I have serious breathing trouble and terrible aces and pain..

I was very grate for the Doctors and Nurses in the Covid Management team ad my Surgery. I was put on drugs which caused adverse effects and was discontinued and was prescribed another drug which helped. I am very grateful to all my friends who fast and prayed for me. God certainty heard the prayers and healed me as majority of the staff did pot expect me to survive.

I have certainly learned to be grateful to be alive everyday when I wake up. I am so tankful for family and friends who helped cheer me up and lifted my spirits. I was prettified of going to bed as I had serious breathing trouble and every night I wandered if that was my last night on earth. I value my life and people lives. I am so glad to be alive and Praise God for healing me.

My lovely wife and I are very grateful for All of the Morrisons delivery drivers (and for Morisons themselves) for keeping our groceries topped up during the lockdown. I am also grateful to my son who has kept us in good spirits by using the messenger facility thus allowing us to see/speak to him and our three grandchildren on a regular basis.

I am very grateful that all my family seem to have weathered the last few months, which for so many families have been awful times in so many ways. The little things like text messages and phone calls from friends and family have been so reassuring that normality will return, so a big thank you to them for keeping my spirits high and my sad moments low

SUZY156 Thu 16-Jul-20 11:56:28

Grateful for having the gadgets to use to keep in touch with my family

JayneDoe Thu 16-Jul-20 11:46:34

I'm grateful for this site. Reading other people's views on situations, good and bad, asking for advice, opinions and to all those who take the time to offer support or to just say we are listening, you and your opinions are relevant. Just to know there is such a place, Gransnet, is a true positive in this midst of this worrying pandemic.

christinawadeley Thu 16-Jul-20 11:41:42

I am thankful for my son's counsellor who has been in touch weekly with us throughout the lockdown. I have learned how to do decoupage cards and have sent them to family and friends to help lift their spirits knowing they are not alone. However, I have missed seeing my friends and family and the support they give me whilst caring for my terminally ill mother. It has been, and still is, very difficult at times to stay positive and not sink.

moonsheep Thu 16-Jul-20 11:33:58

It has been wonderful to enjoy the garden and it's looking amazing as I've had time to spare, I feel so sorry for those without a garden to get out into. I feel very lucky.

Time to re-evaluate and to decide what's really important and what can be discarded.

Breeze81 Thu 16-Jul-20 10:35:08

I'm just very pleased to be able to spend more time at home with my cat to be honest.
