We all know the blissful feeling of having a spare hour or two of precious me-time to do the things that make us feel good. While some might feel productive and get a few tasks done around the house, others may prefer to cook up a storm in the kitchen, have a coffee and a cake with friends or just do nothing in peace and quiet. With this in mind, McCarthy and Stone would like to know how you like to spend your spare time.

Here’s what McCarthy & Stone have to say: “At McCarthy & Stone we offer much more than bricks and mortar, we offer a lifestyle, somewhere you can feel safe and secure, make friends and socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have easy access to local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants. From rural retreats and seaside living, to vibrant city centres and tranquil suburbs, our developments offer something for every taste.

With over 40 years’ experience of building tight-knit retirement communities, you can be confident that we can help find the perfect environment for you. Right now we’re offering to pay up to 100% of your service charge for up to 8 years* or give you 2 months’ rent free* on selected properties, don’t miss out this is a strictly time limited offer.”

*Terms and conditions apply

So, we are asking you: How do you love using your spare time? Do you prefer to keep an active mind and body, or prefer to indulge in leisurely activities to relax? Perhaps you love to go out in nature or maybe you prefer to wander around the high street and visit your favourite shops and restaurants nearby? Is there plenty of choice of things to do to occupy your spare time where you live? How important is it to you to be near to family and friends, and how do you share your spare time with them?

Whatever you do to keep yourself busy when you’ve got a spare hour or two, share on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I love doing cryptic crosswords. I find them very relaxing and satisfying. I am not particularly good at them but when I crack a clue I get a real sense of achievement. I often find that I am stuck and when I go back on another occasion the answer comes straight to me.

I have loads of things I love to do with my spare time. My favourite is walking along the beach and collecting sea glass and taking photos.
After that I enjoy theatre, cinema, visits to National Trust, gardening, upcycling and reading.

I walk daily along the coast - either to the lighthouse and back or the local nature reserve and back.

When I have time to myself I have a long leisurely bath with lots of bubbles and something to listen to - usually a play or an audiobook and just enjoy the story and luxuriate in the warmth.

I relax with a good book & nice cup of coffee. Couple of hours like this gives me more get up and go after.

I like to spend my free tie going for walks in the countryside or just sitting in the garden taking in the fresh air and listening to the birds singing, whilst having a lovely cup of ground coffee and a chocolate biscuit (well it usually turns out to be more than one).

I'm sorry but I don't recognise this state of having spare time! My problem is to find enough time to do all I would like to, though I do try to factor in some relaxation time in the daily routine my wife and I follow (vaguely), mostly associated with tea breaks around 11:00 and 16:00.

What is this FreeTime and SpareTime? Where do I apply for it? Between coping alone with a huge Fruit and Veg Garden, processing the produce into Jam or freezing, visiting OH in hospital daily = 2 hours travel and half an hour visit, Washing and drying enormous quantities of his clothing (they seem to change him 4 times a day), managing the finances, liaising with his care home, keeping in touch with the family who are not allowed visits, etc. etc., if I have a few minutes spare, I usually sleep. Typing this while eating lunch, then off I go again.

I am going through hundreds of old family photos and writing
on the back 'who is who' in the family of many years ago. When my Gran passed away my Mum had no idea who was on the photos. My granddaughter said when I have finished she will put them on line!

Flossieflyby Sun 06-Sept-20 12:21:20

Am walking more and starting to eat out.
Probably watching too many dramas and films on TV.
In non Covid times I travel to spend time with family.
