We all know the blissful feeling of having a spare hour or two of precious me-time to do the things that make us feel good. While some might feel productive and get a few tasks done around the house, others may prefer to cook up a storm in the kitchen, have a coffee and a cake with friends or just do nothing in peace and quiet. With this in mind, McCarthy and Stone would like to know how you like to spend your spare time.

Here’s what McCarthy & Stone have to say: “At McCarthy & Stone we offer much more than bricks and mortar, we offer a lifestyle, somewhere you can feel safe and secure, make friends and socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have easy access to local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants. From rural retreats and seaside living, to vibrant city centres and tranquil suburbs, our developments offer something for every taste.

With over 40 years’ experience of building tight-knit retirement communities, you can be confident that we can help find the perfect environment for you. Right now we’re offering to pay up to 100% of your service charge for up to 8 years* or give you 2 months’ rent free* on selected properties, don’t miss out this is a strictly time limited offer.”

*Terms and conditions apply

So, we are asking you: How do you love using your spare time? Do you prefer to keep an active mind and body, or prefer to indulge in leisurely activities to relax? Perhaps you love to go out in nature or maybe you prefer to wander around the high street and visit your favourite shops and restaurants nearby? Is there plenty of choice of things to do to occupy your spare time where you live? How important is it to you to be near to family and friends, and how do you share your spare time with them?

Whatever you do to keep yourself busy when you’ve got a spare hour or two, share on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Depending on the weather I like to be outside running, walking or gardening, or inside reading scrapbooking or knitting.

Socialising at a distance, that includes country or seafront walks, dining out al fresco or just a coffee or a? of something nice and chat in the garden. It’s just lovely to make the most of the late sunshine at present.
I still walk in the winter, but when forced indoors I cook a lot or read..... am never bored !

Gardening , reading , crochet , watching films and baking . My ' guilty ' time waster is spending too much time on my tablet !

I love to read , i always have a book at hand and as a blogger and book reviewer i write reviews for the books i read in order to share the love of books. It also means i am lucky enough to read books prior to publishing . I find that reading transports me all over the world without leaving the comfort of my sofa

Been doing more in the garden during lockdown and will continue with that and have been buying more plants for outdoors and indoor as well, and also reading more, and have ordered a few books, and a new monthly magazine on subscription, and thinking ahead of a holiday in the uk but maybe a self catering cottage then we can do our own meals although we have been taking advantage of this 50% government pub/restaurant deal in August which continues into September, so thats been a treat. I also like entering competitions. And doing surveys.

Family history.
I am a member of Ancestry and love looking at not just my own family but their neighbours on the different census.

Due to health restrictions all of my pastimes are indoors. I love sewing and it has kept me sane during lockdown. Have done a bit of knitting recently and enjoyed it. Also reading and doing crosswords - usually as a joint venture with my husband.

My spare time is listening to music, using my iPad, and baking, or just sitting relaxing.❤️??xx

Psalmody Sun 06-Sept-20 10:29:51

I adore taking time out to sit with my camera .. anywhere, but usually looking into our garden. Just a few days ago a beautiful sparrowhawk flew onto our silver birch tree, not more than 18 ft from me and treated me to a wonderful set of photos.

I procrastinate.
In spare time I think about all the projects I had planned, or are works in progress, ie the mirror frame I planned to Paint and stencil, the cross stitch project I started 4-5 years ago blush and really need to finish (preferably before Christmas).
In reality, I will pick up my knitting, or read or play mindless games on the iPad. Hopeless case I’m afraid.

I like to do a variety of crafts including card making. I also love drawing and sometimes painting. I enjoy competitions and crosswords as well.

Dannydog1 Sun 06-Sept-20 10:40:59

Reading, knitting walking the dog, playing table tennis and just relaxing watching the TV.

Venus Sun 06-Sept-20 10:46:00

My main pleasure was dancing but that's on hold at the moment. Instead there is lovely forest around me and I enjoy walks there. Having recently moved, I'm trying to sort the garden out, but mainly by instruction! I lunch, I read, watch t.v. of course and I've actually been to the pictures locally. The day seems to pass very quickly!

Rozzy Sun 06-Sept-20 10:52:14

Walking the dog always makes me feel better although I don't always feel like going....Reading a book in the daytime would be a treat but feels a bit self-indulgent.

Tillymint21 Sun 06-Sept-20 11:10:59

Having the house all to myself for a few hours is luxury. I love not being beholden to anyone. I’ll usually read a book accompanied by tea and cake, or catch up on something I wanted to watch that no one else was interested in. Simple pleasures but when it happens it’s lovely!

Echame Sun 06-Sept-20 11:14:57

Since Lockdown I've been taking daily strolls locally, and even though I live in a suburban area have actually noticed things more clearly like vibrant leaf colourings and tuneful birdsong which were always there but I don't think I took the time to fully appreciate before. These little things have really cheered me up and given me hope during these dark and difficult days.

Rabbit Sun 06-Sept-20 11:21:07

I solve crosswords & Killer Sudoku (the more difficult the better), read books in different languages, and sit in our back garden with a cup of coffee watching birds and noting season changes. I also like entering free online competitions. I used to walk everywhere daily before the pandemic but now it is not possible due to too many people on the streets.

Pittcity Sun 06-Sept-20 11:30:01

I need to be in easy reach of public transport into a big town, so that I can have a choice of shops, restaurants, cinema, art, theatre.... whatever I fancy at the time.
At present my priority would be a fast, reliable broadband service and a private outdoor space.

bytheway Sun 06-Sept-20 11:34:41

Knitting...I’ve just discovered it at a ripe old age..so good to be learning something new and the time just flys by.
Other things include walking the dog, reading, relaxing with a magazine and a coffee and a little sewing...been making face masks for family.

KarenBaines Sun 06-Sept-20 11:45:21

spare hours more like... do a lot of cross stitch... also love gardening... so no end to that and always have time for my boys and their boys too

Lorraine1602 Sun 06-Sept-20 11:45:29

I seem to spend far too much time on my iPad, reading emails and entering competitions. If I can tear myself away, I like to read my book or watch a bit of television.

MichD Sun 06-Sept-20 11:46:24

I am always happy to spend my free time with family and friends, I'm not keen on being on my own. I used to love going for coffee, cake and a bit of retail therapy with friends but, since the pandemic, this isn't something I feel comfortable doing anymore. I love to go for a walk with my dog and husband, I love being out in nature, give me grass, trees and flowers and I'm happy. It is so good for my mental health too, I always feel better after a walk.
I'm also a big fan of games, my husband, son and I like to play Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, Boggle, cards both on a console and board ones. I also enjoy reading.

towser44 Sun 06-Sept-20 11:48:00

Just spending time outdoors walking locally. Some very quiet and peaceful locations nearby!

hugshelp Sun 06-Sept-20 11:49:08

Knitting, crochet, photography, and having a good natter.

moneysavvy Sun 06-Sept-20 11:53:03

If the weather is nice going for a walk in the countryside is my favourite pastime.

When inside entering competitions fills up my free time. Wins don't happen often but are exciting when they do.
