We all know the blissful feeling of having a spare hour or two of precious me-time to do the things that make us feel good. While some might feel productive and get a few tasks done around the house, others may prefer to cook up a storm in the kitchen, have a coffee and a cake with friends or just do nothing in peace and quiet. With this in mind, McCarthy and Stone would like to know how you like to spend your spare time.

Here’s what McCarthy & Stone have to say: “At McCarthy & Stone we offer much more than bricks and mortar, we offer a lifestyle, somewhere you can feel safe and secure, make friends and socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have easy access to local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants. From rural retreats and seaside living, to vibrant city centres and tranquil suburbs, our developments offer something for every taste.

With over 40 years’ experience of building tight-knit retirement communities, you can be confident that we can help find the perfect environment for you. Right now we’re offering to pay up to 100% of your service charge for up to 8 years* or give you 2 months’ rent free* on selected properties, don’t miss out this is a strictly time limited offer.”

*Terms and conditions apply

So, we are asking you: How do you love using your spare time? Do you prefer to keep an active mind and body, or prefer to indulge in leisurely activities to relax? Perhaps you love to go out in nature or maybe you prefer to wander around the high street and visit your favourite shops and restaurants nearby? Is there plenty of choice of things to do to occupy your spare time where you live? How important is it to you to be near to family and friends, and how do you share your spare time with them?

Whatever you do to keep yourself busy when you’ve got a spare hour or two, share on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

A long challenging bike ride, slow shower, followed by sitting in the sun reading my book.

I catch up with friends on the internet. Send a few emails and make a few phone calls to the ones that don't do emails. Its lovely to get the replies.

Love spending time with family and nothing better than sitting down catching up with my daughters busy lives and enjoying lots of cups of tea.
If I am by myself I am happy doing jigsaw puzzles or reading a good book.

Spending time gardening

I love to take walks by our canal; there is so much beautiful plant and bird life to see, and I love to see the swans with their cygnets and watch the youngsters' progress (nearly the size of their parents now, but still grey)
When the weather is too bad for walking I love a good crossword

I like to enter competitions, but spend most of my time in our new garden growing fruit and veg in raised beds and trying to get rid of the weeds and brambles!

I like to enter competitions - like this one!

During lockdown I started doing jigsaws and now have arounf 20 of them that I've really enjoyed doing. I tend to opt for Anne Stokes designs or Disney designs.

I like gardening.
I have certain favourite television programmes that I watch with my feet up on the sofa, an ice-cream lolly in my hand and a cat on my lap.
I'm an online competition addict. Not very successful this year but I keep trying.

Trying to get out a daily walk (when weather allows) or at least some kind of home exercise and/or yoga. Need to keep fit and healthy

I have loads of spare time now that so many of the things I usually do during the week have closed, but I'm never bored. I read, surf the net, read discussions in forums like this, walk the dog, walk me! The list goes on

I love spending time in the garden pottering about with my plants and making the place look colourful with nice flowers. I also enjoy keeping active walking our new beautiful labrador Callie.

Gardening while the weathers fine and walking with my husband

Seakay Sun 13-Sept-20 17:19:23

I enjoy knitting, patchwork and container gardening.
I've found those colouring in books surprisingly relaxing - 20 minutes helps to get rid of the frustrations I usually feel after checking Twitter!
Reading has always been my go to so it's great to have the local library open again.

smiffy1062 Sun 13-Sept-20 16:45:30

I love keeping busy, jobs around the home and garden, crafting, jigsaws, reading, walking, visiting stately homes (when not in lockdown) learning new things, my last course was upholstery which was great fun.

Blondie82 Sun 13-Sept-20 15:39:18

I've like to go for a walk, watch tv, listen to music or read

gran1 Sun 13-Sept-20 15:14:06

I have two sorts of free time.....the totally self indulgent one, where I do all the codewords and number puzzles in the paper, kenken being my favourite. These are what my mother would have deemed 'useless' activities. They're not useless at all as they reboot me!
Then there's constructive activity like gardening, walking, sewing and quilting, playing piano and concertina and litter-picking in my beautiful local area. Something to show for my time, and reboot myself at the same time.....Maybe mother was right.
