We all know the blissful feeling of having a spare hour or two of precious me-time to do the things that make us feel good. While some might feel productive and get a few tasks done around the house, others may prefer to cook up a storm in the kitchen, have a coffee and a cake with friends or just do nothing in peace and quiet. With this in mind, McCarthy and Stone would like to know how you like to spend your spare time.

Here’s what McCarthy & Stone have to say: “At McCarthy & Stone we offer much more than bricks and mortar, we offer a lifestyle, somewhere you can feel safe and secure, make friends and socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have easy access to local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants. From rural retreats and seaside living, to vibrant city centres and tranquil suburbs, our developments offer something for every taste.

With over 40 years’ experience of building tight-knit retirement communities, you can be confident that we can help find the perfect environment for you. Right now we’re offering to pay up to 100% of your service charge for up to 8 years* or give you 2 months’ rent free* on selected properties, don’t miss out this is a strictly time limited offer.”

*Terms and conditions apply

So, we are asking you: How do you love using your spare time? Do you prefer to keep an active mind and body, or prefer to indulge in leisurely activities to relax? Perhaps you love to go out in nature or maybe you prefer to wander around the high street and visit your favourite shops and restaurants nearby? Is there plenty of choice of things to do to occupy your spare time where you live? How important is it to you to be near to family and friends, and how do you share your spare time with them?

Whatever you do to keep yourself busy when you’ve got a spare hour or two, share on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I have loads of things I love to do with my spare time. My favourite is walking along the beach and collecting sea glass and taking photos.
After that I enjoy theatre, cinema, visits to National Trust, gardening, upcycling and reading.

I love doing cryptic crosswords. I find them very relaxing and satisfying. I am not particularly good at them but when I crack a clue I get a real sense of achievement. I often find that I am stuck and when I go back on another occasion the answer comes straight to me.

I have been part of a writing group in the local library for the past ten years or so. At the moment it is not available due to Covid. Usually we are given a title at the end of each meet up, I then spend the following week compiling a grizzly murder, or an unusual plot of some kind. These are usually about 2000 words. Plus when we go on holiday I always write a blog as we go, we once spent a month in Australia on an escorted tour. Then, a month in New Zealand, I type the blogs out when we get home and put the photographs with the different places. When I read them again I relive these experiences, it’s wonderful. I suppose that I should try and get them published? Perhaps someday I will. When I find TIME!

Many things, most importantly, the daily dog walk, which is my favourite thing to do. They are so enthusiastic and enjoy it so much. I also write stories, enter competitions, make things from clay. Then go to bed early so I can read for an hour or two.

One of the positive things to come out of lockdown for me was being able to read more, and I'm determined to make a conscious effort to keep it up, so for me it would definitely be reading!

I like talking and listening to people
A little harder with Covid-19 but is still possible on a smaller scale although more needed than ever at the moment. If I take a walk into the village I meet several people who just need to talk. Loneliness is a dreadful thing. When indoors I enjoy my writing and most other things to keep me from doing the housework!

rainbowvalley Sun 06-Sept-20 14:03:28

Walking, playing instruments and browsing websites

Like to go walking, crafting - crochet, needle felting, jewellery making, pottering in the garden, reading a good book. Have missed meeting up with family and friends this year but we are all trying to keep our distance.

I do like surfing the internet- playing games to keep sharp. Today I hope to finish a piece of knitting - a babies cardigan - and am looking up a video on how to knit the button band on. I am also interested in dolls house miniatures, collecting and repairing same, but I haven't as much room to display as I would like.

I spend my spare time painting and meditating.
I find both extremely relaxing and have helped immensely during lock down.
Excellent prize
