We all know the blissful feeling of having a spare hour or two of precious me-time to do the things that make us feel good. While some might feel productive and get a few tasks done around the house, others may prefer to cook up a storm in the kitchen, have a coffee and a cake with friends or just do nothing in peace and quiet. With this in mind, McCarthy and Stone would like to know how you like to spend your spare time.

Here’s what McCarthy & Stone have to say: “At McCarthy & Stone we offer much more than bricks and mortar, we offer a lifestyle, somewhere you can feel safe and secure, make friends and socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have easy access to local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants. From rural retreats and seaside living, to vibrant city centres and tranquil suburbs, our developments offer something for every taste.

With over 40 years’ experience of building tight-knit retirement communities, you can be confident that we can help find the perfect environment for you. Right now we’re offering to pay up to 100% of your service charge for up to 8 years* or give you 2 months’ rent free* on selected properties, don’t miss out this is a strictly time limited offer.”

*Terms and conditions apply

So, we are asking you: How do you love using your spare time? Do you prefer to keep an active mind and body, or prefer to indulge in leisurely activities to relax? Perhaps you love to go out in nature or maybe you prefer to wander around the high street and visit your favourite shops and restaurants nearby? Is there plenty of choice of things to do to occupy your spare time where you live? How important is it to you to be near to family and friends, and how do you share your spare time with them?

Whatever you do to keep yourself busy when you’ve got a spare hour or two, share on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Lots of interests. Cooking, walking, reading, genealogy, music, dancing, travel - problem is how to fit them all in. Every day has cooking/music/reading.

sammylea80 Mon 07-Sept-20 15:50:40

I like to head out in the sunshine on my bike or if the weather is bad it's nice to curl up with a book.

I love attending pub or charity quizzes so watch a lot of tv quiz programs for revision and I spend a lot of time caring for my garden. I'm also a member of various online survey sites and like to keep up with the news on a regular basis during the day.

When I'm not working or taking on extra shifts, besides also doing two voluntary jobs I have many things I like to do - socialising with friends and family, reading, crosswords, entering online competitions, card making, crochet, watching the odd bit of telly, sear hung out bargains at charity shops, visiting the coast, walking, a bit of ebay selling, decluttering... Then there's also the things that have to be done - housework, laundry, gardening. Then sometimes I like to do nothing, just relax and recharge my batteries or even have an afternoon nap!

Lovelykins47 Mon 07-Sept-20 12:53:34

I used to be a teacher of Modern Foreign Languages in the UK.
I am now retired but make an effort to keep up my language skills as it keeps my brain in working order.
I don't think about free time as such but like to keep busy using my languages. This morning I have translated a letter from English into French for a close friend of mine.
I like reading, writing, doing competitions and researching things of interest on the internet.
I like walking but it is too hot for that activity until late evening or early morning so a bit restricted on this one till it cools off.
I look after a group of feral cats who live in the field at the back of my house which keeps me busy with feeding and watering.
I would love to come back to the UK to see friends but there are too many virus cases for me to feel safe.
I am 72, an asthmatic and I have had a recent breast cancer operation so UK is not the place for me to be at the moment.
All the best to all Gransnetters and keep safe and well.

Kicking01king Mon 07-Sept-20 11:06:44

I love reading and always have a book on the go.
I also enjoy entering competitions - ever the optimist!

chris8888 Mon 07-Sept-20 10:55:54

Reading is my all time go too, I buy secondhand in charity shops or online so not to expensive. The library too, of course. Second is entering competitions, which I have done since the 80s. Much harder these days to win though as so many people do the same. Then walking though I slipped and broke my ankle so that is on hold at the moment.

Something I find enjoyable such as reading or playing piano - relaxing and good for personal wellbeing.

ScodieHo Mon 07-Sept-20 10:30:53

In my free time at present I am busy making Jewellery, mostly bracelets using semi precious stones which I will then donate to the local Salvation Army shop. They will be able to charge more for them than if I just give the beads. I always support the Salvation Army as they go out of their way to support those who need it most and are always one of the first on the scene when disasters occur.
