We all know the blissful feeling of having a spare hour or two of precious me-time to do the things that make us feel good. While some might feel productive and get a few tasks done around the house, others may prefer to cook up a storm in the kitchen, have a coffee and a cake with friends or just do nothing in peace and quiet. With this in mind, McCarthy and Stone would like to know how you like to spend your spare time.

Here’s what McCarthy & Stone have to say: “At McCarthy & Stone we offer much more than bricks and mortar, we offer a lifestyle, somewhere you can feel safe and secure, make friends and socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have easy access to local amenities like shops, pubs and restaurants. From rural retreats and seaside living, to vibrant city centres and tranquil suburbs, our developments offer something for every taste.

With over 40 years’ experience of building tight-knit retirement communities, you can be confident that we can help find the perfect environment for you. Right now we’re offering to pay up to 100% of your service charge for up to 8 years* or give you 2 months’ rent free* on selected properties, don’t miss out this is a strictly time limited offer.”

*Terms and conditions apply

So, we are asking you: How do you love using your spare time? Do you prefer to keep an active mind and body, or prefer to indulge in leisurely activities to relax? Perhaps you love to go out in nature or maybe you prefer to wander around the high street and visit your favourite shops and restaurants nearby? Is there plenty of choice of things to do to occupy your spare time where you live? How important is it to you to be near to family and friends, and how do you share your spare time with them?

Whatever you do to keep yourself busy when you’ve got a spare hour or two, share on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £100 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I have started to do the diamond art paintings. They are so relaxing and really good for mental health.
A bit fiddly at times but still pleasurable.

Spare hours are rare between childcare and attempting to keep the house clutter from taking over but if the weather is good I will be in the garden trying to take control out there.

If it is too cold, wet, windy, I like to sew while listening to a podcast.

I write poetry and sometimes perform it at Open Mitch evenings. I meet a lovely mix of people of all ages. It has given me a new lease of life at 80!

When I get time to myself I love getting stuck into a good tv series on Netflix and chilling on my bed, cuddling with my two dogs, I also love spending time with my husband and kids, seeing my sisters and parents, and having a cuppa and a catch up with my friends, I love listening to music, and watching football on tv and watching my son play football too

As I am retired, I suppose all time is "free" time. There must be quite a number of people like me with mobility problems so energetic dog walking is out as is cruising for lack of funds. However our minds still function, so access to a library nearby and, if possible, access to lectures at the end of decent public transport links are things I would like, along with the giant encyclopedia in my computer so that anything can be brought to my chair at will.

If it's fine I might do a bit in my tiny garden, or take a local walk or cycle along the sea-front bike path.
Indoors I could do some baking, or batch cooking for the freezer, or just read with a mug of something hot, or enter online competitions like this one!

Three or four times a week I like to start my day with an early morning (Zoom) yoga session. It loosens me up, and starts my day off with a calm and positive mindset.

Working on my allotment in the afternoons is such a pleasurable and worthwhile pastime and provides me with congenial company from fellow allotment owners as well as a great opportunity to grow veggies that really contributes to eating a healthy diet.

These two pastimes definitely keep me healthy physically, well balanced mentally and thoroughly involved with like minded company.

I like to lie in bed, read and drink coffee. Gardening, National Trust visits and coffee with friends are also fun.
