I'm 53 and still getting regular periods every month, I am getting other symptoms occasional hot flushes, weight gain and irritability - when can I expect my periods to slow down

fevertree Fri 02-Oct-20 19:16:34

There are often posts about vaginitus and vaginal atrophy on these forums and I know of a few friends who have to try and manage it too. If you don't have it/have never had it (despite having had a hysterectomy and ovaries removed) does that mean oestrogen is still being produced? And if that is so, from where?

megjoe Fri 02-Oct-20 14:16:16

Hi I have now had hot flushes for about 5 years . Are there any particular foods for supplements you would recommend to alleviate these as I have quite disturbed nights. Thanks

SuzC Fri 02-Oct-20 13:41:29

Would dropping oestrogen levels cause you to get 'hairier'? I am getting far more & thicker 'whiskers' now and my leg hair is more pronounced. This is not something I have read about in menopause symptons before - is it something that needs maybe checking out with blood tests?

Why are some women affected more than others?

I'm 59 and have been taking HRT for the past 3 years. Is there a time limit and is it ever a good idea to keep on taking it beyond 60? Thanks to lockdown and working from home I managed to get my weight down this year, for the first time in years, so I'm worried about the associated problems that the menopause brings, especially the weight gain.

Why does the menopause affect your hair?

Julie1977 Thu 01-Oct-20 21:41:08

Is hair loss a sign of menopause and if so are there any supplements that can help?

purplevamp Thu 01-Oct-20 15:40:05

How do you know when menopause has started? I've been told that hot flushes are unbearable and that your whole body feels like a furnace, is this true?

zoeypma Thu 01-Oct-20 15:04:02

My daughter is 47. For the past 8 years she's taken the contraceptive pill which prevents the normal cycle, so that she doesn't experience a monthly bleed. Recently, she has been experiencing the kind of symptoms which appear to be related to the peri menopause. I've always felt (but never said!) that the contraceptive pill she's taking can't be good for her body long term. She has asked for my advice and, while I'm inclined to speak out against this kind of pill, I wondered what you might advise?

thehumblerah Thu 01-Oct-20 13:30:24

Are hot flushes, dizziness, and an extremely itchy scalp and acne all normal signs of menopause? If so, roughly how long will this go on for?

athenacarina Thu 01-Oct-20 12:10:35

My periods have always been heavy and long, lasting sometimes up to 10 days at a time, and then they started waning off now and again over the past year or so.
I had a large fallopian cyst removed a couple of years ago which they had thought from the scans was ovarian.
But I have not had a period for the past few months now. I couldn't really say I have hot flushes as I have suffered with so many issues with running water down my back over so many years since a collapse which could have been related to something else, but perhaps it might be something to do with it too. I'm a bit of a medical mystery! Either way, I'm rather glad to be rid of my periods at the age of 49.

Why do some women suffer so badly with hot flushes and mod swings during menopause?

jollo Thu 01-Oct-20 06:57:39

Insomnia is my problem, help

TwiddleDee Thu 01-Oct-20 02:18:32

I am 44 and not yet in my menopause, and due to heavy bleeds I've been prescribed a contraceptive pill that for the last two years has prevented me from ever going through the ovulation and menstruation cycle; therefore I wondered whether this may delay my menopause?

marymod Thu 01-Oct-20 00:12:38

I have PCOS and so don't know if I've entered menopause or not - how do I tell?

hopezibah Wed 30-Sept-20 23:29:09

I have had really strange things going on with my period for the last couple of years (since around age 40) - could that be linked to menopause starting and if so, how/when will I know. My periods have been "struggling to start" each month with several days of spotting and then 2 really really heavy days. They never used to follow this pattern.

Nicole1709 Wed 30-Sept-20 21:29:55

I haven't started menopause yet, but have had problems in the past with anxiety and depression. I have spent a lot of time working through this, but worry that the hormones caused by menopause will bring them back. Is this likely, and is there anything you would advise to help with this?
