Book club and e books

A question... when we do book club we tend to send out hardbacks or paperbacks, sometimes proof copies. But as many of you (us!) have e-readers I'm interested to explore e-books as a format too. Not exclusively - we realise not everyone has a kindle or a kobo or whatever - but as a proportion perhaps.

So do let us know if this would be of interest and then we could take it further (or not!)

Would the availability of ebooks for the book club mean that you could include those of us who live outside the UK?

(I'm not even sure we're excluded at the moment, but I would guess so.)

I love my kindle, too and have never enjoyed the physical side of books. The rainforests have suffered enough, and I always have the old saying 'paper carries germs' at the back of my mind when I borrow or lend a book. If I'm reading something written on paper I get frustrated that I can't tap on a word to check its definition, and that the book won't remember where I had got up to if I don't mark the page myself.

I love e-books. I use Kindle on my Ipad and buy most of my books from bookbub.com I'm pretty sure they have a website in the UK. It said on the internet that they started a UK version in 2014. It would be bookbub.co.uk.
I have gotten a lot of books for free or very inexpensive and have very seldom gotten one that I didn't like.

You might find the What Are You Reading Now thread helpful for ideas houseseller

Hi am new to this area. I am an avid reader and have run out of ideas on what to read next.
I very much enjoyed behind closed doors, I couldn't put it down. I enjoy Ken Follet and Jeffrey Archer their books have very good plots, however I have read most of them so looking for more ideas. I have also read most of John Grisholme and James Patterson. I only read on my Kindle as I have difficulty holding books and turning pages due to Pain in my hands.

I have written a book and have found people still like a hardback copy
I love real books. It's nice to see them on a shelf.

I don't have a Kindle but have been using my iPad for several years now to download books and think I've only had a few 'real' books since - one of which my husband bought me for Christmas. I used to be a prolific reader and could sit for hours lost in the fictional world but these days I only seem to manage a page at bedtime due to work and the internet (and GN!). I did however spend most of the Christmas holiday laid on the settee with flu so read the entire Galaxy Jackson book he'd bought in 3 days. I've just finished my last book so on the hunt for something else before going onto the next in the series I've been reading.

I have a miniKobo, which I really like as it fits nicely in almost any handbag, but I do enjoy real books and pass them on to family members. I don't mind what form my winnings are in, as long as I keep winning. ?

Could we not have a choice of real book or e book?

Av1dreader Tue 15-Mar-16 15:32:02

I love e books. I read on my kindle and the kindle app on my iPhone, the book synchs between devices so I don't have to carry the kindle everywhere. Space was a problem before I used e books, I now only keep my favourites and cookery books.

I can read chick lit without a blush

Haha, I'd never thought of that aspect of it! Men people can read porn without a brown paper cover grin

Stansgran Tue 15-Mar-16 09:15:02

I love my Kindle as I can read chick lit without a blush but I do like passing on books to friends. I feel a book shouldn't be left on a shelf but keep moving house to be enjoyed by others. It's not easily possible with ebooks . Our library is doing emagazines and ebooks.

I have a kindle which lay unloved and neglected in a drawer until I saw the first three of the Shetland books offered recently and decided to download them, so i have re"kindled" my relationship with it! I still prefer a book - I like to go to the library - but I acknowledge that the kindle has definite advantages.

Indinana Mon 14-Mar-16 22:40:05

Oh I still can get lost in a book. It is the most wonderful feeling, when everything else recedes and the story is everything.

I love my Kindle - e-reader technology has transformed my life. I am now never without something to read, wherever I am. In the old days if I found myself wanting to pop in for a coffee somewhere but had forgotten my book, I would have to buy a newspaper or magazine. Now, even without my Kindle or iPad, I've always got my iPhone on me, complete with the iBooks and Kindle apps. Definitely the best thing since the proverbial sliced bread smile

I know what you mean, whitewave. I lived in books when I was younger but find it harder and harder to get 'into' them these days. I certainly couldn't read now what I did then.

whitewave Mon 14-Mar-16 21:45:01

Why can't I get utterly lost in a book as I did as a child?

whitewave Mon 14-Mar-16 21:44:14

I dont mind my kindle but love my books - the smell and the feel. Nothing tactile about a kindle but souless.

Like jing though haven't found a super duper book for ages. They are all OK but nothing more.

gillybob Mon 14-Mar-16 21:40:12

I love my kindle, but I love traditional paper books too. Happy (and grateful) to receive a good book in whichever format. smile

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 14-Mar-16 21:15:49

And in reply to the former bit - I've read lots this year. Really, really good stuff. Some coming up for book club soon/not that soon

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 14-Mar-16 21:14:43

Jingl - magic (or a redeemable code - one of those)

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 14-Mar-16 20:38:50

How can you give away e-books? confused

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 14-Mar-16 20:37:57

Just wish I could find a book, any format, that I could really get into. Seems harder and harder these days. sad

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 14-Mar-16 19:57:07

We won't - promise. But we know that some people do prefer e-books (I don't like reading hardbacks as much but I like 'real' books too) so I wanted to explore whether we should offer that option where we can. But as well as not instead of

joannapiano Mon 14-Mar-16 19:16:20

I love traditional books. Please don't stop them.

suzied Mon 14-Mar-16 18:46:24

I love my kindle - much prefer it to real books, easier to read, change the font, get a book instantly, great for holidays, travelling, reading in bed and not having to put the light on etc etc

Humbertbear Mon 14-Mar-16 17:57:36

I use the kindle ap on my iPad and much prefer to read books on that. I have stopped buying hard copies
