Site update - update passwords

In case you're following the hacker story over on Mumsnet, we wanted to let you know that there is nothing to show that Gransnet is under a similar attack. However, as a precaution it might be a good idea to update your passwords (good practice to do this regularly anyway). You can reset your password here. And as usual, if you spot anything odd, please report it to us or email us at [email protected]

Why would it matter íf someone hacked into your GN account? confused

I suppose they could put mischievous posts up. But no one would notice in my case anyway.

Bellanonna Wed 19-Aug-15 10:05:57

Are you 'fessing to being mischievous jbf ? grin

Alea Wed 19-Aug-15 11:05:10

I have just done as you suggest, but noticed a message saying that there was a problem with the page so it was being "reloaded." Is this normal?

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 11:11:14

Can I say that I am a little cross with gransnet.
As I asked that question last week on Site stuff and was told it wasnt necessary.

I know you are saying now to do it as a precaution, but it looked rather obvious to me last week, with all the goings on on mumsnet, that it was wise to update them on gransnet.

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 11:13:24

On a different tone.

I was very sorry to read on a online newspaper, what happened to Justine last week.
It must have been hugely scary and upsetting.

I hope that her and her family are fine, and that sort of thing never happens to her again.

No, I'm not Bn! hmm

Still want to know what harm can be done though. Just out of interest of course.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Aug-15 11:15:28

OMG! What happened to Justine? Link pretty please.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Aug-15 11:20:11

Thanks soon.

I'm not really laughing.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Aug-15 11:20:29

Yes I am

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 11:22:05

From the password point of view, some people I think use the same password for several things, not just mumsnet or gransnet. So a hacker can then sometimes access emails and financial matters for example.
I think that is the reason for caution. I presume.

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 11:25:59

Well, I clicked on the link given in the OP, entered my email address, got an email from GNHQ with a link to change password BUT when I opened it it said 'Link expired'!

What do I do now? confused

Hi soontobe
It wasn't at that stage. And at the moment we have no reason to believe GN has been compromised - or that they have interest in us. But obviously if you have a Mumsnet password then please do change that now.

Tech are working round the clock monitoring the situation. But updating passwords regularly <whistles innocently while tapping away furiously> is a good idea. #horridlittlehacker
We'll keep you up to date if anything changes.

Alea - just checking with tech about that.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Aug-15 11:30:36

I Didn't read it properly. Didn't see the bit about possible gunman prowling around! That was NOT funny! shock

(I thought they thought Justine was a gunman) Sorry.

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 11:32:04

Perhaps they are still under attack?

I lurk occasionally on mumsnet.
I knew things were serious from mumsnet's point of view, when they started engageing with the hacker online, being light about it, but basically asking him what he wanted.
I hadnt been back to the story since, so didnt know that things had ramped up considerably.

From the link above[havent read it yet] it appears that a mumsnetter and Justine, and Rebeccamumsnet were all visited by police. How scary for them all. Especially as the police called at night.

I presume Ana that gransnet will update this thread shortly.

Nonnie Wed 19-Aug-15 11:32:37

Think I must be missing a gene. Why do people do such things? What do they get out of it? So much nastiness in the world and for what?

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 11:33:06

Eh?

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 11:33:32

(that was to soontobe)

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 11:34:07

x post.
I menat that perhaps mumsnet are still under attack.

No I dont have a mumsnet password. Thanks LaraGransnet.

soontobe Wed 19-Aug-15 11:38:22

I think I read somewhere Nonnie that they find it fun.

Ana Wed 19-Aug-15 11:51:24

Tried again and it worked - panic over! grin

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 19-Aug-15 11:54:30

Alea - Sounds like just a browser thing. Did it reload again ok?

Ana - We've just had another look at the reset pword and it seems to be working ok. Can you try again and email us if you're still having a problem with it?
