Just over a week to go until the Great British Bake Off returns (not that we're counting or anything) and to celebrate this jewel in the crown of the TV schedules, a little competition.

We're giving away two gorgeous books - Recipe For Life (Mary Berry's autobiography - £20) and Mary Berry's Cookery Course (£25) - to one lucky gransnetter.

How to enter? Simple. We're after limericks on cake, baking or Bake Off. The choice is yours.

Competition closes Monday 10 August at midday. (Usual T&Cs apply) So get creating!

Many thanks for my books which arrived this morning. The DGDs will love the cookery course and I'm looking forward to getting stuck into Recipe For Life.

helmacd Wed 19-Aug-15 19:04:04

Recipe book received - thank you very much. I was thinking of giving it to my daughter, as she has 2 growing boys to feed, but having flipped through it I'm very tempted to keep it for myself!

helmacd Wed 12-Aug-15 11:07:18

greatly surprised to get a mention! Thank you. Congratulations to the winners- who both, as well as producing great limericks, seem skilled in the art of double entendre, much loved by Mel and Sue!

sue01 Wed 12-Aug-15 11:01:55

Thank you so much - The Vicar is thrilled to bits!!

Thank you lots, Gransnet and congrats to all, winners or not! The comp was great fun and I really enjoyed entering and reading others' entries.

merlotgran Mon 10-Aug-15 18:39:32

Ooooh! Thank you Gransnet and shysal My DGDs love GBBO so the books will be very popular.

I thought my limerick was a bit norty and then I spotted milli's grin

shysal Mon 10-Aug-15 17:32:38

What can we say? The standard was as high as one of the showstoppers in last week's Bake Off. So we got a panel of judges to vote and after a lot of cake discussion they reached a decision. And the winner is...

merlotgran with this:

When judging the puddings and pies
And flashing those Hollywood eyes,
Paul needs to be wary
Of gimlet-eyed Mary,
Who knows how to spot a good rise!

There were so many brilliant entries that we thought we should recognise a couple more too. So in second place, winning a copy of The Trifle Bowl and Other Tales is milli with this:

A contestant on GBBO
Put all of her goodies on show.
Her buns and her baps
Were released from their wraps
Until Mary and Paul shouted 'Whoa!!!'

Plus honourable mentions to Sue01 and helmacd for these (respectively) - you each win a copy of the Mumsnet Top Bananas cook book

The Vicar has asked me to say,
Mary's book wouldn't half make his day.
Our Church Fete needs a prize,
And with cakes, breads and pies,
We could sell Raffle tickets all day

I’ve tried and I’ve tried till I’m blue
To turn out confections of choux
I whisk and I beat
Expecting a treat
But end up with globules of GOO!

A huge thank you to all who entered and congratulations to the winners (who will be getting emails from us shortly).

I tried to bake a nice cake with a cherry
but it sank and now I'm not feeling merry
the cherry should've first been dusted with flour
but it's much too late now.
please! don't tell Mary Berry.

Choaky Mon 10-Aug-15 11:25:50

Recipes practised to perfection
to prevent Paul and Marys rejection,
but things don't go to plan
"It was fine baked at home"
to buy them is now my intention.

I had a dream....

I'm in the Great British Bake Off.
I was chosen from thousands you see.
The cameras are rolling, the ovens are on
It's Paul, Mary Berry and me.

The timer is on, the ingredients ready,
Now come on old girl, keep your hand steady.
Madeira Cake, Black Forest Gateaux,
I think I'll make mine in the shape of a châteaux.

Cake in the oven starting to rise,
Wonderful aroma, that's a surprise!
Decorated carefully, not much more to do.
Have I done it properly, have I thought it through?

Cake stand on the table with châteaux gateaux atop.
I hope when I take it for judging it isn't marked a flop.
So now the day is over, its nearly time for tea,
And there in the tent after judging, stand Paul, Mary Berry and me.

I WON!!!!

I had a dream....

The Great British Bake-Off's on telly
More yummy cakes for my belly,
Each week it's a flan,
A tart or meringue,
I look like I've eaten a welly!

GeorgeW Mon 10-Aug-15 01:53:53

If only I was as good as Mary
and could bake cakes light & airy
but the thing about Mary Berry
is her trick is lots of sherry!
I love watching the Bake Off
and seeing all those cakes to scoff
So come on Gransnet pick me
and I'll go on a baking spree!

Gilla01 Mon 10-Aug-15 00:06:23

There was a young girl in a frock
Who said it's very easy to mock
My cakes were so bad
They made me feel mad
I wanted Rock Cakes not cakes like rock!

Choaky Mon 10-Aug-15 00:01:52

Contestants skills put to the test
hoping their baking is best.
Measuring and mixing with haste
for the look and the taste and
praying Paul and Mary say "Yes".

Mary, Paul, Mel and Sue,
Are part of the 'Great British Bake Off' crew.
They judge and taste,
While expanding their waists,
Their innuendos are naughty too!

eviesgranma Sun 09-Aug-15 21:41:50

We have known Mary for many years,
she taught us to bake cakes without any tears,
pastry ,cakes and even bread dough,
she gave us the courage to give it a go.

There was a man called Clive
Collected honey from a hive
To make a sweet cake for his wife
And his hurry he tipped some honey
On his vest - oh no what a mess
And the bees chased him for miles.

Mary, Mary, baking Queen,
my cakes a fright like Halloween,
to win your beautiful recipe book,
I hope, would make me a better cook!
Bake off's here, but my cakes a 'has been'.

superhez Sun 09-Aug-15 18:13:04

There once was a food writer named Mary
who's sponge cakes were quite legendary
she's stolen our hearts
with her pastries and tarts
unlike her co-host, who's frankly quite scary!

JoniBGoode Sun 09-Aug-15 16:01:46

There once was a baker named Paul
Whose doughnuts were always too small
Mary filled them with jam
He said "thank you ma'am"
Now they are the plumpest of all

Marian1412 Sun 09-Aug-15 14:27:36

There once was a baker named Mary
Whose cakes were all light and airy
She demonstrated how to aerate and fold
Producing cakes a delight to behold
Following her lead
I've tried hard to succeed
But nothing's more rotten
Than my soggy bottoms!

There was a old lady from Nantucket
who made some bread in a bucket
slicing was tough
and the texture so rough
that all she could do was suck it!

jeberdes83 Sun 09-Aug-15 12:12:10

One day as I mused by a lake,
My thoughts wandered over to cake.
I'm no good at baking, so my mind was just faking,
Can someone please teach me to bake?!

jeberdes83 Sun 09-Aug-15 12:05:14

I decided a cake I would bake
Red velvet I thought I would make,
I got all the "stuff"
Mary said was enough,
The result was a beautiful cake.
