I was given a bunch for my birthday and now they are past their best I'm wondering if I could put them out for the birds
I've done it with my own Sunflowers but am cautious as they are cut flowers.

I think it is likely they would have been sprayed with something or other which would be harmful to wild life. I have left those I grew myself out for the birds & squirrels but never bought ones.

Tanith - I am in the same position as you. My sunflowers are still in water but have no petals left on them.

My thinking was that if they were still in the water, the seeds would develop a bit more. They look quite small at the moment.

Maybe it would it be better to dry them out?

I was going to give them to the birds. I wasn't aware that they might have been sprayed with anything.
