Pockety

PocketyOur kids' book of the month for April is a simple story about grief, and the continuation of life, as a tortoise mourns her lost friend.

“You know, grand-mother, when I grow up, I’m not going to do things the way you did.”

“Is that so?” said Pockety.

“Absolutely,” said Bubble. “You see, I will have a friend. He will sit next to me at school. He will be very, very good-looking, very, very nice, and very, very clever. He will be just as I would like him to be. And afterwards, we will go on long journeys all the time. And I will always be very happy. And he will never leave me,” she added throwing a small blue pebble into the water.

“What a good idea, my little one,” said Pockety.

Moving, funny and insightful, Pockety captures the feelings of losing someone we love – from denial and anger to eventual peace – through the world of a young tortoise. It speaks clearly to that part of humanity we all experience: what we must pay for having love in our lives, and how we may grow around its loss.

Pockety is a tale for young and old, and for anyone who has ever loved. The suggested reading age is 7+
