What to look for in a raincoat

"I have a red raincoat with a hood that I picked up whilst sheltering from the pouring rain in Seasalt a while ago. They had a sale on, which was fortuitous. It was an impluse buy as it was marked down by £60, but it has proved to be a great purchase ever since!"

1. Make sure it's waterproof

This might sound obvious, but you'd be surprised at how many raincoats aren't actually shower-resistant. Our advice? Double check the material before you buy so you're not caught out.

2. Opt for a hood

A hood really is a life-saver when you leave the house, get caught in a downpour and then realise that you don't have your trusty umbrella with you. Try a detachable hood or a hood with drawstrings for maximum practicality.

3. Choose a breathable fabric

When the temperature is fairly high (well, for the UK at least) but it still insists on pouring with rain, a raincoat with breathable fabric will ensure you stay dry in all senses of the word. No one wants to sweat profusely in order to avoid a bit of rain.

4. Go for a longer length

There's nothing worse than staying dry up top only to find out that your lower half looks like you've just waded through a rather large swimming pool. A longer length raincoat will ensure that you avoid this unfortunate eventuality.
