"My girls...had a big personalised photo album made of the little girls from birth to present year including photos of me and their mother and aunty with them as well. I absolutely loved it and it was such a personal present made up for me with love and I'll treasure it always."

"My two children in NZ and OZ gave me a photo book full of pictures of my five grandchildren. It's a lovely keepsake. They took the photos whilst staying in OZ and there were quotes from each of the children. It was a smashing gift."

Expanding on the green theme, this Sussex trug is great for the garden (yes we know it's technically 'stuff' but you can put more 'stuff' in it).

"A Sussex trug with a few garden treats in. [My friend] was thrilled with it, and I then bought myself one, which I use for loads of purposes as well as bringing in fruit and veg from the garden."

Or simply send your green friend off to a lovely garden with an RHS or National Trust membership (bearing in mind that this involves more stuff in the form of magazines).

"I don't think you could go wrong with anything from Jo Malone. They're so beautifully presented and I don't know anyone who doesn't love her scents."

"Jo Malone shops do a lovely experience where you have a hand massage whilst drinking champagne and choosing a perfume. You could have a bespoke perfume made at Penhaligons or Floris I believe."

The gift of time

"Personally? I'd like TIME. I would like to be given time by my children to help in the garden, drive me here or there (I'm not a brave driver), or something similar. I have plenty of 'stuff', am not really interested in shows."

"I am always very thankful of family helping out with the odd jobs. We recently had an hour with family helping out in the garden. Taking out an old tree stump. Helping to plant the plants we had bought. A bit of weeding and plenty of tea and nibbles."
