The Churchill Awards

Sir Alec FergusonThe Telegraph has joined forces with Churchill Retirement Living to create the first ever Churchill Awards to recognise people over the age of 65 who are achieving great things. Alex Ferguson, Judi Dench, Peter Blake, David Attenborough, Alan Sugar, Kenneth Clarke - they're all able people at the top of their professions, who happen to be entitled to draw a pension.

Most of the awards will be chosen by a panel of judges, but the Community Award, in association with Gransnet, aims to recognise a man or woman who is working tirelessly for his or her local community, as nominated by gransnetters.

If you know someone who is indispensable in your local community, an unsung hero or heroine, someone who puts themselves out for others, please nominate them. You can do this either on the thread or by sending an email to [email protected], giving their name and telling us in no more than 100 words why they deserve to win. The closing date for nominations is 9 April.

The idea behind the awards

The over-65s play an increasingly important role across society – in politics, art, scientific research, sport. To celebrate that achievement, The Telegraph and Churchill Retirement Living have assembled a panel of judges including Sir Roger Carr, Esther Rantzen, Gransnet’s Geraldine Bedell, Tom Wright of Age UK and Liz Kendall MP, shadow minister for older people. Winners, who may or may not be household names, will be chosen on the strength of their contribution to their field in 2012.

The Churchill Awards will recognise achievement in the following categories:
