There was a young granny called Jingle
Whose humour did oft' make me tingle.*
She's no longer here,
Oh dear and oh dear!
Please come back Jingle and mingle.

* with mirth!

My grandmother had a little tin, in the sideboard drawer, in which she kept all her loose change. "Fetch me my little tin" was the phrase that signalled a little something. And when DH came to take me out on a Saturday (I met him when I was 14) she would always slip half a crown into his hand as we went out. She was special.

thanks from me, too Nanban

Butternut Wed 01-Feb-12 10:20:28

What special memories for you, Carol.
Both sets of my grandparents had died by the time I was around, so I was especially pleased my sons had a grandma to remember smile.

Carol Wed 01-Feb-12 08:16:07

Nanban thanks

Carol Wed 01-Feb-12 08:14:53

Butternut that reminds me of my grandmother, who was relatively poor when I was a child, but always had a sixpence in her pinny for me, and in the bottom drawer of the dresser was a treasure trove of bits of toys, incomplete jigsaws, books with no spines and a bag of marbles. I would head to that drawer every time we went to visit, and have such happy memories of playing there and being taken round the local village shops so the butcher, baker and any neighbours out shopping could see how I was growing.

I'd walk 90 miles for the chance to see my grandchildren!

Lovely memories for your boys, butty. smile

Butternut Fri 27-Jan-12 13:15:12

My sons haven't forgotten the times Grandma looked after them when I couldn't get time off work. It was a long journey to take them and bring them back, but worth every minute when I hear them remember their times with her; brown sugar on toast for breakfast, sledging on old trays and black bin liners, long walks in the bluebell woods, the sweet jar and the box of very old, tatty toys which was the first thing they went to find, and her radio. Irreplaceable .

Have to say both my mother and my in-laws used to come and support when DH was abroad, which was a lot of the time. I shall be crossing the channel to look after DGDs at half-term in a couple of weeks. Can't wait - haven't seen them since November!

I mustn't be unjust to MiL - she meant well. How's that for 'damn with faint praise'?

jeni Fri 27-Jan-12 11:50:29

Sounds like my late mother.

Annobel Fri 27-Jan-12 11:49:16

My ILs came to stay with the children so that we could have a couple of nights away. I left plenty of food for them, but MiL didn't trust my cooking (it was mutual) and appeared to have fed them on baked beans. She also took it upon herself to scour my brand new non-stick frying pan with a Brillo pad. shock
